Deux religions : Œuvres contre sang

Si vous voyagez dans le monde, vous serez pardonné de penser qu’il existe des milliers de religions et de systèmes de croyance. En réalité, il n’en existe que deux :

la religion basée sur les œuvres des hommes

la religion basée sur le sang de Jésus

Les gens perdent des années à étudier les différentes religions pour essayer de déterminer laquelle est la meilleure. Mais si l’on enlève tout l’emballage, le choix est simple : c’est soit vos œuvres, soit son sang.

Pourtant, les choix simples n’ont jamais été le point fort de l’humanité. Il suffit de regarder l’histoire de la religion…

LE GUIDE DE LA RELIGION POUR LES NULS

Depuis l’époque de Caïn, les hommes ont essayé d’impressionner Dieu avec les fruits de leur travail. Et depuis l’époque de Caïn, Dieu a rejeté leurs offrandes :

Le Seigneur regarda avec faveur Abel et son offrande, mais il ne regarda pas avec faveur Caïn et son offrande. (Gn 4, 4-5)

Abel, vous vous en souvenez, a offert le premier-né de son troupeau tandis que Caïn a apporté un panier de fruits. Pourquoi l’offrande d’Abel a-t-elle été acceptée alors que celle de Caïn a été rejetée ?

Par la foi, Abel a offert à Dieu un sacrifice plus excellent que celui de Caïn, par lequel il a obtenu le témoignage qu’il était juste….. (Heb 11:4 NKJV)

Caïn et Abel avaient tous deux la foi, mais la foi d’Abel a conduit à un sacrifice plus excellent. Abel a sans doute appris de ses parents comment Dieu avait versé le sang des animaux pour cacher leur nudité. Par la foi, Abel a eu confiance qu’un sacrifice de sang de cette nature le rendrait agréable à Dieu, et cela a été le cas.

La foi d’Abel était une réponse à ce que Dieu avait fait, mais la foi de Caïn était dans l’œuvre de ses propres mains. Abel considérait ce que Dieu avait fait, mais Caïn voulait que Dieu regarde ce qu’il avait fait.

Au lieu d’adopter la définition de Dieu d’un sacrifice acceptable, il a essayé de forger sa propre religion et a été rejeté. Caïn s’est mis en colère et a boudé. Voici ce que Dieu a dit ensuite :

Si tu fais ce qui est juste, ne seras-tu pas accepté ? Mais si tu ne fais pas ce qui est juste, le péché est accroupi à ta porte ; il veut t’avoir, mais tu dois le maîtriser. (Gen 4:7)

L’offrande de Caïn a été payée à la sueur de son front et au travail de ses mains. C’était un sacrifice coûteux, mais inutile et inacceptable. Dieu, dans sa miséricorde, a indiqué à Caïn la bonne direction, mais Caïn ne s’est pas repenti. Au lieu de cela, il a assassiné son frère et le reste appartient à l’histoire.

DEUX FRÈRES, DEUX RELIGIONS

La religion basée sur l’effort humain était, et continue d’être, inacceptable pour Dieu. Vous pouvez travailler dur, servir et apporter des sacrifices coûteux chaque jour de votre vie, cela ne changera en rien votre position devant lui.

Vous ne pouvez pas acheter votre salut avec des actes de charité. Vous ne pouvez pas corrompre votre entrée dans le Livre de la Vie avec vos actes de justice. Ne vous mettez pas en colère comme Caïn, repentez-vous simplement et mettez votre foi dans le sacrifice de sang donné par Dieu.

Bien sûr, cela ne signifie pas que vous devez aller massacrer de pauvres moutons ! Le sang des animaux ne fait rien pour effacer nos péchés (Hébreux 10:4).

Avant la croix, ces choses n’avaient de valeur que parce qu’elles pointaient vers le sang de Jésus. Nous vivons après la croix. L’Agneau de Dieu est venu et son sacrifice unique a été plus que suffisant pour expier tous les péchés du monde (He 9,26).

Si vous ne mangez la chair du Fils de l’homme et ne buvez son sang, vous n’avez pas la vie en vous. (Jn 6, 53).

Avez-vous faim et soif du Christ et de sa justice ? Ou êtes-vous satisfaits des fruits de votre propre travail ? Jésus a clairement indiqué que la religion basée sur les œuvres conduit à la mort. Mais la foi en son sang mène à la vie éternelle et à la faveur de Dieu.

DEUX PREDICATEURS

Tout comme il n’y a que deux religions, il y a deux sortes de prédicateurs : ceux qui disent que nous sommes qualifiés par les œuvres et ceux qui disent que nous sommes qualifiés par le sang de Jésus. Ces deux prédicateurs peuvent se ressembler, mais leurs messages ne pourraient pas être plus différents. Considérez les 10 contrastes suivants…

Le prédicateur des œuvres dit que vous devez faire des choses pour rester sauvé. Faites une erreur et vous êtes perdu pour l’éternité.

Le prêcheur du sang dit que le sang de Jésus a obtenu votre rédemption éternelle et complète (Héb 9:12). Rien ne peut te séparer de l’amour de Dieu.

WP : Ne touchez pas ! Ne manipulez pas ! Ne touchez pas ce qui est impur et soyez saints.

BP : Vous êtes sanctifiés par le sang de l’alliance (He 10:29), c’est-à-dire par le sang de Jésus (Lc 22:20). Nous nous séparons des choses impures non pas pour devenir saints mais parce que nous sommes déjà saints et quelle communion la lumière a-t-elle avec les ténèbres ?

WP : Tu dois vaincre dans les épreuves de la vie et te vêtir de vêtements blancs, sinon il effacera ton nom.

BP : Il ne s’agit pas de toi. Jésus est ta victoire ! Lave tes vêtements sales et moralisateurs dans le sang purifié de l’Agneau (Ap 7,14). Réjouis-toi, car il a promis de ne jamais effacer ton nom.

WP : Fais tes prières et prends un temps de silence chaque jour. Si tu ne restes pas en lui, il te coupera et te jettera dans le feu.

BP : Jésus a dit : ” Celui qui boit mon sang demeure en moi, et moi en lui ” (Jn 6, 56). Votre “demeure” n’a rien à voir avec le fait d’avoir un temps de silence. Dieu vous a réconcilié avec lui par le Christ. Votre réconciliation est quelque chose qu’il a fait, pas vous. Lorsque vous appréhendez qui il est et combien il vous a déjà béni, un appétit sain vous motivera à le découvrir davantage dans sa parole.

WP : Méfiez-vous du péché ! Restez loin du péché et des pécheurs !

BP : Nous sommes appelés à être conscients du Christ, pas du péché. Son sacrifice a éliminé le péché (Hé 9:26). Nous avons été libérés de notre péché par son sang (Ap 1:5). Vivez libérés de la peur et de la condamnation.

WP : Lorsque vous péchez, vous devez vous confesser pour être pardonné à nouveau.

BP : Vous avez été pardonné il y a 2000 ans (Col 2:13). Votre pardon n’est pas basé sur la confession, mais sur son sang (Matt 26:28). Son sang est une condition nécessaire et suffisante pour votre pardon complet (Hé 9 & 10).

WP : Lorsque vous péchez, vous devez vous confesser pour redevenir pur.

BP : Le sang de Jésus vous purifie et continue à vous purifier (1 Jean 1:7).

WP : La confession est bonne pour libérer une conscience coupable. Demandez au Saint-Esprit de vous examiner et de vous montrer vos défauts.

BP : Le sang du Christ a purifié votre conscience afin que nous soyons libres de servir Dieu (Hé 9:14). À cause du sacrifice parfait du Christ, le Saint-Esprit choisit de ne plus se souvenir de vos péchés (He 10:17). Il ne fera que vous convaincre de votre justice en Christ (Jean 16:10).

WP : Dieu est saint et vit dans une lumière inaccessible. Ne pensez même pas à vous en approcher.

BP : Vous qui étiez autrefois éloignés, vous avez été rapprochés par le sang de Christ (Eph 2:13).

WP : Personne ne peut voir la face de Dieu et vivre. Mieux vaut rester en sécurité et se tenir en retrait.

BP : “C’est pourquoi, frères, puisque nous avons l’assurance d’entrer dans le lieu très saint par le sang de Jésus… approchons-nous de Dieu avec un cœur sincère, dans la pleine assurance de la foi, ayant nos cœurs aspergés par le sang de Jésus pour nous purifier d’une conscience coupable et ayant nos corps lavés avec de l’eau pure.” (He 10, 19-22)

PASTEUR CAIN CONTRE PASTEUR ABEL

Qui écoutez-vous ? Où se trouve votre foi ? Est-elle dans les œuvres de religion qui tuent ? Ou dans le sang vivifiant de Jésus-Christ ? Vous efforcez-vous de gagner la faveur de Dieu ou vous reposez-vous sur l’œuvre achevée de la croix ?

Que vous soyez catholique ou protestant, épiscopalien, baptiste ou membre de la branche occidentale du presbytérianisme réformé américain, cela ne fait aucune différence.

Si vous vous tenez sur le sang de Jésus, alors vous êtes complètement pardonné, vous êtes acceptable, et la faveur de Dieu repose sur vous !

Le remède à la culpabilité

“Destined to Reign” by Joseph Prince

Life is too short to waste reading bad books or getting distracted by bad doctrine. One of my aims in keeping this blog is to promote good books that help us understand our position in Christ, that unpackage the goodness of God revealed to us through Jesus. To that end I can highly recommend Destined to Reign by Joseph Prince.

Destined to Reign is a distillation of 10 year’s worth of preaching by Prince at New Creation Church in Singapore. The cover may give you the impression that this is some kind of self-improvement book, but it isn’t. This is a book celebrating our Great King and all that He has done on our behalf.

In this book Joseph Prince takes aim at the mixing of law and grace that has continued since the time of the Galatians. He says, “even though the law is holy, just and good, it has no power to make you holy, just and good” (p.16). The purpose of the law is to reveal our need for a Savior. When we mix law with grace we lose the benefits of both. He notes that the 10 commandments were kept hidden under the mercy seat inside the Ark of the Covenant. They were not for public viewing, yet today we put them on posters and hang them in our churches and Sunday Schools.

This practice of mixing law with grace gives rise to what he calls “schizophrenic Christianity”. A schizophrenic Christian is one who says:

“Sometimes God is angry with me, sometimes He is happy with me. Sometimes He blesses me, sometimes He curses me. Sometimes God cares for me, sometimes He leaves me. Today, He prospers me, but tomorrow, He may give me poverty to humble me. Today, He heals me, but tomorrow He may give me a disease to teach me a lesson. Today, He forgives all my sins. Tomorrow I am responsible for my sins.” (p.37)

In other words, God is good, but only sometimes. People who think like this are living between two covenants. They are not rightly dividing the word of truth. They are living as if the cross did not make any difference.

The main clause of the new covenant, according to Prince, is found in Hebrews 8:12: “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Christians are perfectly forgiven. There is no sin the Christian is not forgiven of. Yet many Christians live as if this were not true. They give or work because they think they need to strive to remain forgiven. This is tantamount to saying that the blood payment of Jesus was not enough.

Like Paul, Joseph Prince is strongly opposed to mixing grace with human effort. He says there is nothing we can do to qualify ourselves.

“This is the true ministry of any new covenant Bible teacher or preacher – he seeks to unveil Jesus to you and qualify you by the blood of Jesus. He does not come to unveil your faults or bring your sins to remembrance to disqualify you from entering God’s presence and enjoying His blessings. That is what an old covenant preacher does.” (195)

Some books convey just one great revelation, but Destined to Reign covers everything from forgiveness to faith and healing and communion. Inevitably there is some repetition, but the lessons of grace probably need to be repeated. Many good questions are raised in the book. For example, “Is God judging America?” Answer: No. America and its sins have already been judged at the cross.

Although this book covers a lot of ground, mostly it is about Jesus and how we can find Jesus on every page in the Bible. Studying Jesus’ comments made on the road to Emmaus, the author reasons that we don’t read the Bible to find out what to do and what not to do. We study the Bible to see all the things said in the scriptures concerning Jesus. A great strength of Destined to Reign is how it reveals Jesus and the new covenant in the elements of the old covenant – the five burnt offerings, the Ark of the Covenant, etc. You will never look at Leviticus the same way.

I should take this opportunity to also recommend the companion Destined to Reign Devotional which presents the main book in daily bite-sized chunks. “Unmerited Favor” by Joseph Prince

Have you ever noticed how the wisdom of the world and the old covenant sound much alike? If you do good, you get good. You reap what you sow. What goes around, comes around. Both perspectives advocate self-effort. Both preach self-dependence and reward based on merit. In contrast, the gospel of grace says it’s all about Jesus. Grace says it’s his effort, his merit and his righteousness that matters. There’s no mixing these two perspectives – it’s his effort or mine, his merit or mine.

In his 2007 best-seller Destined to Reign, Joseph Prince drew a clear line between the gospel of grace and the unholy concoction of grace and law that has been preached since the time of the Galatians. In his recent book entitled Unmerited Favor, Joseph Prince builds on that grace foundation by unpackaging the consequences of living self-dependent or Jesus-dependent lives. Prince’s basic idea is that if trust Jesus for salvation, we ought to trust him for everything else too. What stops the unmerited favor of God in our lives? According to Prince, the greatest obstacle is our own self-reliance:

“There are some believers who may not articulate it, but in their hearts they believe that without Jesus they can still succeed. By believing and acting on this, they fall from the high place of God’s grace (his unmerited favor) back into the law, back into trying to merit and deserve success by their own efforts.” (p.24)

This is both astonishing and obviously true.

Why is it that we trust Jesus for our salvation, we may even trust him for our healing, but we don’t trust him for our success? We work like part-time believers. We tell ourselves we’re doing it in his name and for his glory, but our work ethic is 100% old covenant thinking. Deep down we believe that success will only come if we make sacrifices or sow thousands of hours. Sure, we thank Jesus for the cross, but his work actually has no bearing on our work. We strive and struggle just like everyone else, ignoring the supernatural advantages that are ours in Christ.

Jesus didn’t just die to set us free from the curse of the law. He also died that we might inherit the blessings of Abraham. As Prince says,

“In Christ, you are an heir of the world – its goods, its endowments, its riches, its advantages and its pleasures. This is the promise that God made to Abraham and his seed. Don’t apologize for it. It is your inheritance in Christ!” (p.230)

Now right there some of you might switch off thinking that Prince is preaching a “health and wealth” gospel. He isn’t. Sure, he does have a fair bit to say about prosperity, but that is not his main message. (Lest you be distracted, I have posted elsewhere my summary of Joseph Prince’s teachings on prosperity and success.) What he is preaching in Unmerited Favor is complete and total dependence on Jesus for everything.

We Christians – and especially pastors – tend to get so caught up doing the Lord’s work that we lose focus and burn out. We know we shouldn’t, yet we do it anyway. According to Prince, we do this out of ignorance:

“Many good, well-meaning and sincere believers today are defeated by their lack of knowledge of the new covenant and all the benefits that Jesus has purchased for them at the cross… It is the lack of knowledge of what Jesus has accomplished at the cross that has robbed many believers of enjoying these good gifts and benefits.” (p.95)

I know from personal experience what it is to preach Mary while acting like Martha. Probably every pastor does. Just look at our schedules! If this is you, if you are busy to the point of distraction, then you definitely need to read Unmerited Favor. In it Prince gives the most compelling reason I have read for being more like Mary than Martha.

Jesus said, “one thing is needful” and that is to sit at his feet and behold him. For many of us – and particularly pastors – sometimes the hardest thing to do is to sit down. That looks too much like resting and how can we rest when there’s work to be done? So we sit for just a minute, then jump right back up into old covenant mentality and human performance.

A couple of years ago God spoke very clearly to me. He told me that he wanted me to “do nothing.” It was the hardest word I have ever received. Tell me to part the Red Sea and I’ll give it a go. Tell me to walk on the water and I’ll do it or drown trying. But tell me to do nothing at all except rest, and I mean long-term rest, living in that rest, remaining in that rest – well that’s ve-ry hard indeed! It does not come naturally.

But I am learning that when we make him our priority, when we have no agenda other than Jesus alone, the whole world changes around you. Problems bow down. Inspiration comes. You find yourself doing the right thing at the right time and, yes, you have restful increase instead of stressful increase (because it’s based on his merit, not yours).

If I were to sum up Unmerited Favor in two words, they would be stop trying, as in, stop trying to succeed in your own strength, stop trying to earn God’s favor, stop trying to make it happen, stop striving, stop struggling, and trust him for everything. No seriously, you really, actually need to stop because for as long as you continue to trust in your self-effort, you’re operating outside of grace and cursing your work. The sooner you stop, the better everything will be.

Or if I were to sum up Unmerited Favor in just one word, it would be receive. You can’t receive while you’re trying to make it happen. Grace doesn’t share the stage with human effort. If you want to enjoy the unmerited favor of God in your life, stop trying and just receive.

Prince is certainly not calling us to live idle, passive lives. Our performance stills matters. But effective performance is grounded on the revelation that we have been made righteous by faith. Right living follows right believing. I had hoped that he would say more about how we work under grace, but perhaps that’s for the next book.

You can read Unmerited Favor without first having read Destined to Reign, but I recommend you read both in the order they were written. If Destined to Reign is all about what Jesus had set you free from, then Unmerited Favor is what he has set you free into. In Destined to Reign Prince comes across as an authoritative preacher of the gospel. In Unmerited Favor he is more the tender pastor. Both books are outstanding.

Tenir la tête

Col 2:19

Et ne pas tenir la tête, de laquelle tout le corps, nourri par les articulations et les liens, s’accroît de l’accroissement de Dieu.

Mais en parlant de la vérité dans l’amour, ils peuvent croître en lui à tous égards, qui est la tête, le Christ :

De qui tout le corps, bien uni et coordonné par l’action de toutes les jointures, selon l’efficacité de chaque partie, contribue à l’accroissement du corps pour son édification dans la charité.

Nous devons nous accrocher au Christ si nous voulons grandir. Sinon, nous mourrons et nous dépérirons. Seules les branches qui restent attachées à la Vigne peuvent être remplies de la vie de son esprit.

Tenir est le mot krateo et voici ce qu’il signifie

Cela signifie “tenir fermement et ne pas lâcher”, “prendre possession”, “s’approprier le Christ”.

Col 1:23

Si vous persistez dans la foi, fondés et affermis, et si vous ne vous éloignez pas de l’espérance de l’évangile (ici “si” est le mot “eige” qui donne plus d’assurance que le douteux “si” ou “ei”

Puisque vous continuez ! C’est mieux. Puisque nous restons dans la Foi et il n’y en a qu’une.

Eph 4:5

Un seul Seigneur, une seule foi, un seul baptême,

Nous pouvons être construits et établis en Christ.  Nous avons seulement besoin de rester en Lui et de ne pas être trompés pour regarder les œuvres mortes et les mystères.  Mais nous ne devons pas nous permettre de nous éloigner de notre Espérance.

Et le vrai Mystère est là où nous avons ceci

Col 1:27

A qui Dieu a voulu faire connaître la richesse de la gloire de ce mystère parmi les païens, qui est le Christ en vous, l’espérance de la gloire :

C’est là le secret et le trésor de la sagesse.

Col 2:3

En qui sont cachés tous les trésors de la sagesse et de la connaissance.

Mais les hommes vous en détourneront. Ils vous en dissuaderont et vous tromperont en vous empêchant logiquement de croire que vous êtes complets en Christ et que Christ est vivant en vous !

Col 2:7

Enracinés et édifiés en lui,

Comment pouvons-nous rester enracinés et édifiés en Lui ?  Marchez dans l’amour.

Les hommes essaieront de vous arracher à votre trésor… Ils essaieront de vous amener à l’esclavage et à la servitude de la liberté que vous avez avec le Christ en vous et vous en Christ. Car en Christ, vous avez tout ! Toute la plénitude et la complétude du Dieu infini !

Col 2:8

Prenez garde que personne ne vous pervertisse par la philosophie et par une vaine tromperie, selon la tradition des hommes, selon les rudiments du monde, et non selon le Christ.

Oui, les systèmes du monde semblent si logiques. La philosophie par tradition est enseignée dans toutes les écoles, mais le Mystère du Christ est-il expliqué ? Ce qu’Il a accompli pour vous et moi ?  Il a circoncis tous nos péchés et la chair de notre corps. Est mort et nous sommes morts avec Lui. Ressuscité et nous sommes ressuscités avec Lui. Rendu vivant avec Lui pour toujours. Pardonnés à jamais !

Ne laissez personne vous juger car vous avez été jugé à la croix, aussi juste que Lui.

Ne laisse personne dominer sur toi et dire que tu es perdu parce qu’il est plus saint que toi.

Col 2:18

Que personne ne vous détourne de votre récompense par une humilité volontaire et une adoration des anges, en s’immisçant dans les choses qu’il n’a pas vues, vainement gonflé par son esprit charnel,

Mais au contraire, accrochez-vous à la promesse. Accrochez-vous au Christ.

Col 2:19

Et ne retenez pas la Tête, de laquelle tout le corps, nourri par les jointures et les liens, et uni entre eux, croît selon l’accroissement de Dieu.

Vous allez donc croître et grandir infiniment avec Dieu.   C’est l’amour et le don qui vous rendent plus grand, et non l’orgueil et la prise.

Cherchez les choses d’en haut. C’est-à-dire la réalité spirituelle qui s’accomplit, nous croyons en Lui et nous ne l’avons pas vu avec nos yeux mais avec les yeux de notre cœur.

Col 3:1

Si donc vous êtes ressuscités avec le Christ, cherchez les choses d’en haut, où le Christ est assis à la droite de Dieu.

Nous sommes complets et avec Lui dans les cieux, regardant vers le bas.

Pensez à vous comme cela. Ne pensez qu’à votre nouvelle naissance d’en haut. Gardez votre esprit sur le fait qu’il est monté à la droite de Dieu et que vous l’êtes aussi maintenant !

Col 3:2

Fixez votre affection sur les choses d’en haut, et non sur celles de la terre.

Laissez tomber les fausses religions créées par l’homme. L’ascétisme. La croyance que toute la création physique et la chair sont simplement mauvaises et que toutes les choses spirituelles sont bonnes. C’était l’enseignement de l’époque du gnosticisme.

Car le seul but des choses physiques, y compris votre chair, est de servir le Dieu créateur et bon Père. La chair est aussi bonne qu’elle peut être utilisée par Dieu. C’est un outil et elle n’est pas intrinsèquement mauvaise. Tout dépend de la façon dont vous l’utilisez… Un peu comme un couteau ou un pistolet.  Un couteau peut tuer une personne, tout comme un pistolet. Mais ils peuvent aussi sauver une personne, comme dans une opération chirurgicale, ou nourrir une personne en chassant un repas.

Col 3:3

Car vous êtes morts, et votre vie est cachée avec le Christ en Dieu.

Si nous essayons d’utiliser notre chair à nos propres fins, nous mourrons. En fait, peu importe que nous fassions le bien ou le mal, notre chair mourra et, du point de vue de Dieu, vous êtes déjà morts, sauf pour la nouvelle vie qu’il a donnée en Christ.

Gardez les yeux sur la source de la vie et non sur les choses qu’il nous a données comme le sexe, la nourriture, l’argent et le confort. Tenez-vous bien et possédez le Christ car il vous possède. Il est mort pour vous et vous a racheté de la mort.

La chose la plus dangereuse pour notre foi est la religion

Pas la colère, pas la fornication ou même le meurtre. Nous ne pouvons pas nous sortir du péché par nos œuvres gagnées que le Christ a déjà accomplies’.

Les Pharisiens ont ajouté d’autres règles aux bonnes règles de Moïse que personne ne pouvait respecter.

Ils enseignaient que vous ne pouvez pas faire ceci ou cela certains jours et que vous devez faire ceci ou cela d’autres jours. Mais ils étaient sans Christ et morts jusqu’à ce qu’ils viennent à Lui.

Col 2:21

“Ne manipulez pas, ne goûtez pas, ne touchez pas !”

Col 2:22

(qui font tous référence à des choses destinées à périr [fn]à l’usage) – conformément aux commandements et aux enseignements de l’homme ?

Dieu sait que la nourriture que vous avez achetée aura une date d’expiration et se transformera en moisissure. Mais Dieu sait aussi que toutes les choses, y compris ce que l’homme a nourri de mieux, périront aussi (sans le Christ).

Et ce sont les méthodes mêmes que ces hommes utiliseront pour vous séparer de votre joie en Christ.

Condamnation et accusation, parce que vous avez oublié de vous laver les mains ? Ou peut-être avez-vous oublié de mettre votre masque Covid ?

Mais Dieu est tellement plus sage et plus élevé que toutes les molécules, les virus et les personnes qu’il a créés.

Col 2:23

Ce sont des questions qui ont l’apparence de la sagesse dans la religion, l’humilité et le traitement sévère du corps, mais qui n’ont aucune valeur contre l’indulgence charnelle.

Les légalistes prendront la place des enseignants du Christ et essayeront d’habiter leur temple. Ils érigeront de faux temples et bâtiments pour vous faire honte alors que vous êtes le seul temple que Dieu a créé pour y vivre !

Ils auront des raisons tellement convaincantes et logiques qu’ils sont plus intelligents que vous.  Vous n’avez qu’un amour pour la Bible mais eux ont des diplômes de séminaire et connaissent le grec.  Ils n’ont jamais regardé de porno, mais vous oui. Ils n’ont jamais pris de médicaments, sauf ceux que la pharmacie et les médecins prescrivent légalement. Ils semblent être si religieux mais leur religion est fausse. Elle est déterminée et faite par des hommes et non par Dieu. Et ils sont fiers de vous dire et de vous juger si vous guérissez les gens et nourrissez les veuves le mauvais jour de la semaine. Ils veulent vous convaincre que vous n’êtes pas spirituel ou religieux parce que vous n’obéissez pas à l’église ou au gouvernement au lieu d’obéir à votre coeur et à Dieu.

Ces méthodes des religieux ne peuvent pas arrêter vos addictions, c’est seulement l’Amour et l’acceptation de Dieu qui remplace nos vieilles habitudes par de nouvelles. C’est seulement la grâce qui vous remplit en n’enlevant pas toutes les parties sombres. Vous ne pouvez pas arrêter de penser à manger un cornet de glace si vous répétez “Je ne vais pas manger de glace” encore et encore. Non, la loi vous fera penser davantage à ce bon cornet de glace. Ces méthodes n’ont aucune valeur pour vaincre le péché et l’échec.

Mais être rempli par l’Amour du Christ est comme remplir le verre. C’est efficace et Ses paroles te purifieront. Son esprit saint vous changera. Ne pas essayer de le faire à votre façon. L’amour n’échoue jamais.

La religion que Dieu notre Père accepte comme pure et sans défaut est la suivante : prendre soin des orphelins et des veuves dans leur détresse et se garder d’être pollué par le monde. Jacques 1:27

Holding the head

And do not let anyone talk you out of that!!!

Col 2:19

And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

Eph 4:15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

We need to Hold on to Christ if we want to grow. If not we will die and wither. Only the branches that stay attached to the Vine can be filled with the life of His spirit.

Hold is the word krateo and here is what it means

It means to “hold fast and not let go” “to get possession of” “make Christ our own”

Col 1:23

If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel  (here “if” is the word “eige” which gives more assurance than the doubtful “if’ or “ei”

Since you continue! Is better. Since we stay in The Faith and there is only one.

Eph 4:5

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

We can be built and established in Christ.  We only need to stay put in Him and not be tricked to look to dead works and mysteries.  But we must not allow our selves to moved away from our Hope.

And the true Mystery is where we have this

Col 1:27

To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

This is the secret and the treasure of wisdom

Col 2:3

In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

But men will beguile you from it. Talk you out of it and trick you by logically arguing you out of believing you are Complete in Christ and Christ is alive in You!

Col 2:7

Rooted and built up in him,

How do we stay rooted and built up in Him.  Walk in Love.

Men will try to steal you away from your treasure.. They will try to take you into slavery and bondage from the freedom you have with Christ in you and you in Christ. For in Christ you have it all! All the fulness and completeness of the Infinite God!

Col 2:8

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ

Yes the systems of the world seem so logical. Philosophy by tradition is taught in all the schools, but is the Mystery of Christ explained?? What He has accomplished for you and me?  Circumcised all our sins and flesh off of us. Died and we died with Him. Risen and we rose with Him. Made alive with Him forever. Forever forgiven!

Let no one judge you because You have been judged at the cross as righteous as He is.

Let no one rule over you and say you are lost because they are more holier than thou.

Col 2:18

Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

But instead hold on to the promise. Hold on to Christ.

Col 2:19

And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

You will then grow and grow infinitely bigger with God.   It is love and giving that makes you bigger not pride and taking.

Seek the things above. Meaning the spiritual reality that is accomplished, we believe in Him we have not seen with our eyes but the eyes of our heart

Col 3:1

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

We are complete and with Him in the heavenlies looking down.

Think of yourself like this. Be all about  you new birth from above. Keep your mind on the fact He is ascended to the right hand of God and so are you now!

Col 3:2

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Let go of the false man made religions. The ascetism. The belief that all physical creation and the flesh is just evil and all spiritual things are good. This was the teaching of the day in Gnosticism

For the only purpose of physical things, including your flesh is to serve the Creator and good Father God. Flesh is as good as it can be used by God. It is a tool and is not inherently evil. It depends how you use it… Sort of like a knife or a gun.  A knife can kill an person and so can a gun. But they also can save a person as in surgery or feed a person by hunting a meal

Col 3:3

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

If we try to use our flesh for our own purpose we will die. In fact no matter if we do good or evil our flesh will die, and in Gods Eternal view you already are dead, except for the new life He gave in Christ

Keep your eyes on the source of life and not the things that He gave us like sex, food, money and comforts.

Hold tight and own Christ because He owns you. He died for you and bought you from death.

The most dangerous thing for our Faith is religion

Not anger, not fornication or even murder. We cannot pull our selves out of sin by our won works which Christ already accompllished’

The Pharisees added more rules to the good rules of Moses that no one could keep

The taught you cannot do this or that on certain days and then you must do this and that on others. But they were without Christ and dead until the came to Him

Col 2:21

“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”

Col 2:22

(which all refer to things destined to perish [fn]with use)—in accordance with the commandments and teachings of man?

God knows that the food you bought will have an expiration date and turn to mold. But also God knows all things including the best fed man will also perish (without Christ)

And these are the very methods that these men will use to separate you from you Joy in Christ.

Condemnation and accusation, because you forgot to wash your hands? Or maybe forgot to put your Covid mask on?

But God is so much wiser and higher than all the molecules, viruses, and people He created.

Col 2:23

These are matters which do have the [fn]appearance of wisdom in [fn]self-made religion and humility and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

The legalists will take the place of the teachers of Christ and try to inhabit their temple. The will set up false temples and buildings to shame you when you are the only temple God created to live in!!

They will have such convincing and logical reasons that they are smarter than you.  You have just love for the Bible but they have seminary degrees and know Greek.  They never watched porno but you did. They never took any drugs except what the pharmacy and doctors legally prescribe. They seem to be so religious but their religion is false. It is determined and made by men not God. And they are proud to tell you and judge you if you heal people and feed widows on the wrong day of the week. They want to convince you that you are not spiritual or religious because you do not obey the church or government instead of your heart and God

These methods of the religious cannot stop your addictions, It is only the Love and acceptance of God that replaced our old habits with new ones. It is only grace that fills you not taking out all the dark parts. You cannot stop thinking about eating an ice cream cone if you repeat “I’m not going to eat ice cream over and over. No the law will make you think more about that nice ice cream cone. These methods have no value to overcome sin and failure.

But Being filled by the Love of Chirst is like filling the glass. That is effective and His words will purify you. His holy spirit will change you. Not trying to do it your way. Love never fails.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27

Colossiens

a été écrit par Paul pour révéler le Mystère de Dieu qui est le Christ vivant en nous comme son Corps et son temple. Pourtant, il y avait un faux enseignement concurrent pendant le ministère de Paul appelé ” Gnosticisme “.

Il était basé sur les mystères et la connaissance secrète des initiés. C’était une religion païenne, des mythes et des mensonges qui étaient utilisés pour contrôler les gens. Leurs pseudo-mystères attiraient et trompaient les gens. Tout le monde aime un bon mystère et c’est là que réside le danger.

Mais le Colossien a montré que le Mystère est révélé et qu’il n’y a plus de mystère. Nous sommes COMPLETEURS en Lui et Il vit en chacun de nous par le don de Son esprit !  Nous avons tout et pourtant, comme Adam au paradis, nous sommes tentés d’avoir quelque chose qui nous manque, la ” Sagesse ” ou, en grec, la ” Gnose “, et c’est ainsi que nous perdons notre vraie vie pour une nouvelle contrefaçon brillante.

Col 1:26

Le mystère qui était caché depuis des siècles et des générations, mais qui maintenant est manifesté à ses saints :

A qui Dieu a voulu faire connaître la richesse de la gloire de ce mystère parmi les païens, c’est-à-dire le Christ en vous, l’espérance de la gloire :

La tentation originelle du serpent était censée être la sagesse. Et la sagesse des serpents gonfle l’orgueil comme rien d’autre !

Gen 3:5

Car Dieu sait que le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s’ouvriront, et que vous serez comme des dieux, connaissant le bien et le mal.

C’était la sagesse que le Serpent offrait, même s’il était insensé de quitter Dieu pour rechercher la sagesse. C’est de la folie enveloppée de sagesse.  L’erreur apparaissant comme la lumière.

Comme à l’époque de Colosses, où il y avait tous ces cultes de serpents offrant la sagesse aux seuls initiés. Et ainsi le serpent nous séduit avec la science, la fausse science d’aujourd’hui. Rien de nouveau. De grandes équations sur les tableaux d’Einstein qui sont pour nous, gens ordinaires, des mystères d’initiés.

Col 2:18 Paul a mis en garde les croyants contre le risque de tomber dans cette religion qui est utilisée pour disqualifier ceux qui ont été qualifiés en Christ.

Col 2 :18

Que personne ne vous détourne de votre récompense par une humilité volontaire et un culte des anges, en s’immisçant dans les choses qu’il n’a pas vues, vainement gonflé par son esprit charnel,

Ce genre de personnes nous regardent du haut de leur tour d’ivoire et nous disent que nous avons besoin de leur sagesse. Nous ne devons pas les laisser nous arbitrer et nous exclure. Pas nous qui sommes complets en Christ !

Ils essaieraient de nous convaincre que nous ne sommes pas assez bons pour être en Christ et diraient que nous sommes “HORS” du Christ. Jusqu’à ce que nous obéissions à leurs fausses traditions et règlements, qui ont tous été pris en charge par notre Seigneur aimant.

Dieu merci, nous pouvons être en sécurité et en sûreté dans le Christ, son corps. Nous sommes appelés en Christ et nous pouvons être reconnaissants car la paix que Christ nous a donnée avec Lui et Dieu est une grâce.  Le seul arbitre, le seul juge est Dieu et il est la seule voix que nous devons écouter ! Et il a crié “sauf” et non “out”.

Pourquoi est-ce que j’utilise des termes de baseball ici ? Je vais vous le dire. Les deux mots qui expliquent ce que disent les serviteurs de nos ennemis et ce que disent les serviteurs de notre Seigneur sont des TERMES “UMPIRE”.

Dans le verset 3:15 “Règle” est βραβεύω brabeuō signifie

1. être un βραβεύς ou un arbitre (voir βραβεῖον).

2. décider, déterminer.

3. diriger, contrôler, gouverner

La paix dit donc que VOUS ÊTES EN SÉCURITÉ ! Non pas que vous étiez ou serez, mais vous êtes en sécurité dans le corps du Christ.

Et cette assurance a été donnée comme un antidote à la bande religieuse plus sainte que toi.

Ici, au verset 3:15, le même mot apparaît mais avec “kata”, ce qui lui donne un air de jugement vers le bas. καταβραβεύω katabrabeuōe

I. décider en tant qu’arbitre contre quelqu’un.

II. détourner ou tromper le prix de la victoire.

III. métaph. priver de salut.

Donc, n’écoutez pas ces sales types qui disent “VOUS ÊTES HORS D’ÉTAT !”

Col 3:15

Et que la paix du Christ règne (brabeuō) dans vos cœurs, ce à quoi vous avez été appelés en un seul corps. Et soyez reconnaissants.

Col 2:18 KJV

Que personne ne vous détourne ( katabrabeuōe ) de votre récompense dans une humilité volontaire et un culte d’anges, en s’immisçant dans les choses qu’il n’a pas vues, vainement gonflé par son esprit charnel.

Méditons un peu sur ce que ces versets aux Colossiens nous disent réellement de faire.

Col 2:18 NKJV

Que personne ne vous trompe dans votre récompense, en prenant plaisir à une fausse humilité et à une adoration des anges, en s’immisçant dans les choses qu’il n’a pas [fn] vues, et en s’enflant vainement dans son esprit charnel,

Col 2 :18 FSV ” Que personne ne vous disqualifie, que celui qui se complaît dans l’abaissement de soi et le rituel religieux pour les anges, qu’il a vu après avoir été initié, s’enorgueillisse vainement de son esprit charnel “.

C’est aussi proche de la traduction littérale interlinéaire que j’ai pu mettre en mots.

Col 2:18

Que personne ne vous prive frauduleusement de votre prix, en faisant sa propre volonté dans l’humilité et le culte des anges, en pénétrant dans des choses qu’il n’a pas vues, vainement enflé par l’esprit de sa chair,

Pour comprendre le Colossien, il faut apprendre un peu l’histoire de cette région d’Asie Mineure à l’époque de Paul.  Et comment ces mêmes esprits ont joué avec l’histoire pour faire taire son histoire ! Les mêmes idées sont encore bien vivantes parmi les chrétiens les plus saints et super spirituels.

La fausse humilité est un mauvais tour qui n’impressionne pas Dieu. Ce n’est pas du tout être humble envers Dieu !  Mais la véritable humilité est un fruit de l’esprit, provenant de la vigne, de la tête, de notre Christ !

Il y a une véritable humilité et elle découle du Christ ! Motivée par l’amour.  Mais ces personnes utilisaient “plus humble que toi” par orgueil.  Ils utilisent leur culpabilité pour contrôler et abuser spirituellement. Ils font des esclaves des hommes libres qui sont déjà dans le corps du Christ. Nous devons nous accrocher à la tête du Christ !

Mais les enseignants gnostiques étaient forts dans la culture philosophique grecque ! Paul mettait toujours en garde contre les juifs influencés par les mythes gnostiques platoniciens. Pourquoi ? C’était la méthode calculée des ennemis pour diriger subtilement l’église vers un naufrage.

Pour avoir un exemple de la façon dont la philosophie grecque platonicienne a pénétré dans le monde juif, nous devons nous rappeler l’histoire.  Les Perses sont tombés sous les coups d’Alexandre le Grand, puis le Moyen-Orient a été influencé par les philosophes néo platoniciens et même par la langue grecque.  Ces idées païennes de panthéons et de mythes ont remplacé les écrits inspirés par le Saint-Esprit, de Moïse à David. Elles ont mélangé et corrompu la “tradition des anciens” que Jésus a dû affronter lui-même chez les Pharisiens.

L’idée de l’âme immortelle a été introduite non pas par une nouvelle révélation de Dieu mais par les mythes païens grecs, perses, égyptiens.

L’idée de l’âme, le Chai Nephesh, a été enseignée par Moïse comme étant “une âme vivante”. Mais lorsque la vie du “chai” n’est plus avec le Nephesh et qu’il cesse de bouger, il est mort. Mort et le corps retourne à la poussière. En attendant la résurrection au dernier jour.

Ecclésiaste 9:5,6,10 :

Les vivants savent qu’ils vont mourir, mais les morts ne savent rien, et ils n’ont plus de salaire, car leur mémoire est oubliée.

Leur amour, leur haine et leur envie ont disparu, et ils n’ont plus de part pour toujours à tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil.

Tout ce que ta main trouve à faire, fais-le de ta force ; car il n’y a ni ouvrage, ni appareil, ni science, ni sagesse, dans le tombeau où tu vas.

Ecclésiaste 3:20 :

Tous vont dans un même lieu ; tous sont de la poussière, et tous retournent à la poussière.

Genèse 3:19 :

Tu mangeras du pain à la sueur de ton visage, jusqu’à ce que tu retournes à la terre, car c’est d’elle que tu as été pris, car tu es poussière, et tu retourneras à la poussière.

Psaumes 146:4 :

Son souffle s’en va, il retourne à sa terre ; en ce jour même, ses pensées périssent.

I Corinthiens 15:52 :

En un instant, en un clin d’œil, à la dernière trompette ; car la trompette sonnera, et les morts ressusciteront incorruptibles, et nous serons changés.

Nous attendons la résurrection et la restauration, pas le paradis et l’enfer !

Ce n’est pas l’Écriture donnée aux Juifs qui a enseigné que nous avons tous une étincelle immortelle appelée l’âme.  Cela venait de l’école de Platon et a continué à être enseigné. Même si les Saintes Écritures inspirées de Moïse et de David enseignaient que lorsque l’on cesse de bouger et que l’on meurt, l’âme n’existe plus, dès que le cœur s’arrête.

Mais une chose que tous les païens avaient en commun était la croyance en ce mythe d’une âme éternelle. Une âme qui va dans le monde souterrain pour être jugée.  Ils confondent l’âme qui meurt avec le don de l’âme de Dieu qui ne meurt pas. Son ” âme ” est la seule immortelle et son esprit saint est la vie éternelle.

I Tim 6 :16 ” Lui seul est immortel et habite une lumière inaccessible. Personne ne l’a jamais vu, et personne ne peut le voir. A Lui l’honneur et la domination éternelle ! Amen. “

   Les religions païennes, comme les Romains, les Grecs, les Egyptiens, les Perses, les Babyloniens et toute l’humanité sans révélation vivent dans l’obscurité. Sans connaître Dieu, ils croient tous à une vie après la mort pour cette âme. La Bible dit qu’elle se termine dans la tombe, jusqu’au jour où la Résurrection viendra et qu’Il ressuscitera chaque homme ! Mais ils croient tous qu’au moment de la mort, un ange, un démon, les chiens de l’enfer ou un psychopompe vous emmèneront dans l’autre monde. Cela peut être de l’autre côté de la rivière Styx, ou au centre de la terre où le soleil se couche (égyptien), ou tout autre mythe cool. Mais Dieu n’a jamais enseigné cette absurdité. Il a enseigné la ressurection du corps. 1 Cor 15 :52

Même à Colosses, il y avait une grande influence du mythe gnostique grec.   Ils cherchaient encore des moyens d’atteindre Dieu en montant au ciel avec des drogues, des jeûnes, des transes, des auto-mutilations. Mais Dieu n’a jamais abandonné sa création, son ciel et sa terre sont toujours à lui.

C’est l’homme qui l’a abandonné, tu te souviens ?

Nous sommes toujours fascinés par le désir d’atteindre les étoiles. L’espace est la dernière frontière et si le voyage physique est trop difficile aujourd’hui, nous croyons en la projection astrale… bla bla bla…

” Les Colossiens cherchaient toujours des moyens d’aller au ciel et de s’approprier un morceau de Dieu ” C’est le désir de tous les hommes d’échapper à la mort.

Il y a un mot utilisé ici qui n’est pas compris hors du contexte de la culture grecque ancienne.

Le mot que l’on traduit ici par ” intrusion dans ” est le mot de l’original ” embateuon “.

Et ce mot est totalement changé par le mot en grec ” Me ” qui signifie ” pas “.  Soit il voyait les choses parce qu’il était intitié “, soit il ne voyait pas les choses parce qu’il s’immisçait dans le champ spirituel. Mais si les démons donnent des révélations dans des oracles et des chambres secrètes, ce sont des mensonges. Donc si l’initié pouvait voir des choses qui étaient de faux mensonges. Ou ne pas voir de choses vraies. Cela a la même signification logique. 

Avec le mot “moi” ou “non” à la place, certains ont traduit la phrase “s’immiscer dans les choses qu’il n’a pas vues” et avec le “non” par “se lancer dans des spéculations curieuses et subtiles sur les choses qu’il a vues dans des visions qui lui ont été accordées”.

À cette époque, dans l’empire grec. Ils croyaient en : “l’entrée dans le sanctuaire intérieur après avoir reçu les mystères”. Ceci était répandu dans toutes leurs religions et temples. Il y avait toujours des prêtres qui étaient initiés aux mystères qu’ils utilisaient pour garder le peuple sous contrôle.   Quelle proche contrefaçon l’ennemi a conçu pour imiter le seul vrai mystère qui n’est plus un mystère !  Le Christ vit en chacun de nous dans le Christ. Maintenant, il est révélé. Nous sommes le temple qu’Il a construit !

Mais les religieux aiment garder leurs mystères cachés afin d’avoir leur pouvoir sur les initiés.  C’est ainsi que fonctionnent toutes les sociétés secrètes et les hiérarchies de Satan. Par des tromperies et des hiérarchies des plus intelligents qui abusent des plus faibles,

Col 2:8

Prenez garde qu’on ne vous trompe par la philosophie et par des tromperies vaines, selon la tradition des hommes, selon les principes fondamentaux du monde, et non selon le Christ.

Col 2:9

Car en Lui habite corporellement toute la plénitude de la divinité ;

Col 2:10

et vous êtes complets en lui, qui est le chef de toute principauté et de toute puissance.

La révélation que Paul donnait aux Colossiens était destinée à s’opposer aux mensonges de la philosophie gnostique grecque.

Le Christ est ici le temple et le sanctuaire où Dieu habite. Maintenant, nous sommes complets en lui, ce qui contraste avec la tromperie vide de leur philosophie.

Cet avertissement vient du fait que si vous ne vous reposez pas en étant complet en Christ, vous pouvez vous laisser entraîner dans toutes sortes d’absurdités religieuses en essayant de trouver Dieu alors que vous êtes déjà trouvé par Lui !

Ce verset dit : PRENEZ GARDE. De quoi ?  De devenir des esclaves de l’ennemi et d’être emportés loin de votre appel et de votre but ! Des distractions des rituels et de la religion.  Mais vous êtes déjà assis en Christ !

Pas besoin de laisser cela se produire

Pas besoin de chercher à être initié. Prenez de nouveaux cours pour obtenir la bonne formule pour que l’esprit se mette au travail. Pas besoin Vous êtes complet en LUI !  Pas besoin de jeûner et d’allumer des bougies pour entrer dans le sanctuaire intérieur. Pas besoin de se frotter et d’enlever ses chaussures à la porte.  Pas besoin de jeûner et de battre votre corps jusqu’à la moelle !  Tu es déjà dans le salon de papa à jouer avec ton grand frère.  Tu es chez toi, là où tu es en Christ !

Pourquoi Adam et Eve ont-ils écouté la sagesse du Serpent, alors qu’ils avaient déjà tout ?  Nous avons tout ce qu’il faut là où tu es aujourd’hui en Christ grâce à ses œuvres ! GRACE !

Nous pouvons rester libres de toute personne qui nous asservit en ” étant enracinés et édifiés en Christ ” Ole Devil nous n’avons pas besoin de votre stupide sagesse ! Plus de religion ! Plus de trucs super spirituels

“la connaissance du mystère de Dieu, du Père et du Christ, en qui sont cachés tous les trésors de la sagesse et de la connaissance. “Comme Paul l’a expliqué aux Cossiens dans le chapitre 2 :3-4.

Nous ne devons laisser personne nous empêcher de nous accrocher à la tête. Parce que notre tête est le Christ. Et tout est construit, tout croît, tout est guidé, tout est nourri par la tête qui est le Christ.

Ne laissez personne vous tromper ou vous disqualifier, vous qui avez été qualifié en Christ. Fou complet et tout péché cloué à la croix.  Relisez Col 2 : 10-15 s’il vous plaît

Nous devons nous accrocher à la vigne pour la vie.  Il est la tête du corps.

Mais ceux qui sont religieux et qui nous jugent ne s’accrochent pas à la tête. Ils ont besoin de s’attacher à nouveau à la vie du Christ. Oubliez les faux mystères secrets.

Ils grognent dans l’obscurité, mais nous, qui communiquons régulièrement avec Jésus comme notre tête, nous pouvons être nourris et soignés, nos moindres besoins satisfaits. Et ainsi nous grandissons dans le Fils.  Mais lâcher prise et retourner à la religion morte et aux œuvres est une impasse.

Col 2:19

sans s’attacher à la Tête, de laquelle tout le corps, nourri et uni par les jointures et les ligaments, croît avec l’accroissement qui vient de Dieu.

Paul adresse cette lettre aux Colossiens. Un auteur a dit que cette lettre pouvait être destinée aux “Juifs incrédules” ou aux “Grecs convertis”. Il a également dit que cette dernière hypothèse est probablement la bonne et que ces derniers n’étaient pas de ” vrais ” chrétiens puisqu’ils ” ne tenaient pas la tête “.

Je ne suis pas d’accord avec cela puisque Colossiens s’adressait à

Col 1:2

Aux saints et fidèles frères en Christ qui sont à Colosses : Que la grâce et la paix vous soient données de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ.

Mais Paul mettait en garde les frères et sœurs bien-aimés en Christ contre la perte de leurs privilèges et de leur joie au profit de la religion.

Ils ont peut-être cru, mais ils ont été trompés dans leurs droits de naissance, car ils sont nés avec un gain.

C’est à ces mêmes croyants que Paul disait “Prenez garde que personne ne vous ravisse” dans Colossiens 2 :8.

Une fois qu’un croyant place sa foi dans la foi du Christ, il est sauvé. Peu importe ce qu’il fait, s’il a vraiment crié pour recevoir le Christ comme Seigneur, il est scellé. Et placé dans le Royaume de Dieu. Mais il doit continuer à s’accrocher à la tête pour qu’il grandisse en Chris s’il veut mûrir et grandir…. 

Une des meilleures méthodes de découragement est la religion qui juge chacun de vos mouvements mais pas votre cœur. Dieu connaît ton cœur si tu es à Lui. 

Il ne vous laissera jamais échapper à son emprise.  Mais nous pouvons nous couper de la vigne et quitter la maison du Christ si nous sommes découragés et non édifiés.

Si nous risquons de tomber de la grâce en suivant les traditions de l’homme et la tromperie de la religion dans l’impasse des œuvres. .

Eph 4:14

Afin que nous ne soyons plus des enfants, ballottés et emportés à tout vent de doctrine, par la ruse des hommes et par une habileté rusée, par laquelle ils se tiennent à l’affût pour séduire ;

Eph 4:15

mais, en parlant la vérité dans la charité, qu’ils croissent en lui à tous égards, qui est le chef, le Christ :

Eph 4:16

De qui tout le corps, bien uni et coordonné par l’action de toutes les jointures, selon l’efficacité de chaque partie, contribue à l’accroissement du corps pour son édification dans l’amour.

Nous avons besoin d’entendre la vérité qui nous est dite dans l’amour. Nous avons besoin de vrais enseignants et pasteurs qui nous rappellent que nous avons été rendus complets en Christ et que nous ne devons regarder nulle part ailleurs qu’en Lui pour notre complétude.  Nous avons besoin de leaders qui séparent la religion humaine et les faux rituels de la vérité de l’œuvre du Christ, des leaders qui peuvent discerner l’erreur de la vérité de Dieu.

Tapeinophrosynē ταπεινοφροσύνη ou l’humilité est une belle chose lorsqu’elle est vraie.

Quand l’humilité n’est pas utilisée pour culpabiliser ou condamner les autres en les jugeant ” plus éloignés de Dieu par leur action ou leur non-action “, c’est de la fausse humilité religieuse.

L’humilité du Christ était de faire passer les besoins des autres avant les siens parce qu’il nous aimait.

Paul a ce genre d’humilité lorsqu’il servait les autres en plaçant ses besoins après les siens. Son amour pour les autres a fait de lui un serviteur de l’amour.

Actes 20:19

servant le Seigneur en toute humilité, avec des larmes et des tentations, ce qui m’est arrivé à cause des complots des Juifs ;

Eph 4:2

en toute humilité et douceur, avec longanimité, vous supportant les uns les autres dans l’amour ;

La véritable humilité va de pair avec la douceur, la facilité avec les gens et la patience avec laquelle nous les aimons.

Il s’agit là de qualités surnaturelles qu’aucune personne religieuse ne peut obtenir par ses rituels d’initiation ou par des confidences à des anges, des saints, des morts et des démons à l’esprit familier. Pas du tout

Mais le Christ se donne à nous par l’esprit. Il est la vigne et le fruit de son esprit coule d’abord en nous en apportant l’amour, puis la patience pour gérer les situations et être humble envers les autres. Les faire passer en premier au lieu d’être égoïste. Nous pouvons alors avoir sa capacité à être flexible et doux pour les servir au mieux dans l’amour.

C’est ce que signifie faire partie de la vigne. S’accrocher à la tête qui est le Christ et le laisser nous remplir de son esprit.

Mais les religieux et ceux qui sont si humbles et fiers d’être vertueux sont la cause de divisions et de conflits. Mais la véritable humilité apporte l’union et la paix entre les hommes, pas les combats.

Phl 2:3

que rien ne soit dans un esprit de dispute ou de vaine gloire, mais dans la modestie de l’esprit, chacun estimant l’autre comme plus excellent que lui-même ;

C’est l’humilité que le Christ nous a montrée par son exemple. Il était même prêt à donner sa propre vie pour nous.

Phl 2:8

Et ayant été trouvé comme un homme, il s’est humilié lui-même, et s’est fait obéissant jusqu’à la mort, même la mort de la croix.

Et sans cette humilité désintéressée, il n’aurait pas été récompensé par Dieu.

Sa confiance parfaite en son père lui a permis de s’humilier dans la joie. Sachez que Dieu ne changera jamais, le mensonge n’est pas sa promesse !

Nous aussi, nous devons nous accrocher à la tête qui est le Christ, nous ne devons regarder nulle part ailleurs que vers le Christ.

Nous avons besoin de communier avec Lui et le Père par la communication.  Dans les prières de compréhension et par l’esprit. Révélations. Et l’étude des écritures. En cherchant et en écoutant leur voix.

Ne pas courir vers des substituts mais toujours chercher le Christ, la tête du corps qui est le Temple et le seul Mystère. Le mystère qui n’est plus et qui n’est pas utilisé pour abuser des initiés. Ce Mystère est crié sur les toits maintenant

Col 1, 27

A qui Dieu a voulu faire connaître la richesse de la gloire de ce mystère parmi les païens, qui est le Christ en vous, l’espérance de la gloire :

Et ce sont les prédicateurs que nous écoutons. Ceux qui révèlent et dévoilent les secrets du Christ.

Col 1:28

C’est lui que nous prêchons, en avertissant tout homme et en enseignant tout homme en toute sagesse, afin de rendre tout homme parfait en Jésus-Christ.

L’amour pense d’abord aux autres.  Si vous êtes dans le corps du Christ, tenez-vous à la tête et ne la laissez jamais partir.

Nous sommes ressuscités et nous devons garder cela à l’esprit alors que nous Le cherchons, et non des rituels et des règles faites sur terre. Nous sommes ressuscités et retirés de tout cela et placés dans Son Royaume non pas par nos œuvres mais par l’œuvre que Christ a accomplie à cause de Son amour pour nous,

Col 2:21

(Ne pas toucher, ne pas goûter, ne pas manipuler ;

Col 2:22

qui doivent tous périr avec l’usage 😉 selon les commandements et les doctrines des hommes ?

Col 2:23 

Lesquelles choses ont en effet une apparence de sagesse dans le culte de la volonté, et l’humilité, et la négligence du corps ; non dans aucun honneur à la satisfaction de la chair.

 Col 3:1

Si donc vous êtes ressuscités avec le Christ, cherchez les choses d’en haut, où le Christ est assis à la droite de Dieu.

Colossians

Was written by Paul to reveal the Mystery of God which is Christ living in us as His Body and his temple. Yet there was a competing false teaching during Paul ministry called « Gnostism »

This was based on mysteries and secret knowledge of the initiates. It as Pagan religion,  myths and lies which were used to control people. Their pseudo mysteries enticed and decieved people. Every one loves a good mystery and that is the danger

But Colossian showed that the Mystery is Revealed so there is no longer any mystery. We are COMPLETER in HIm and He lives in each of us by the gift of His spirit!  We have it all yet like Adam in paradise we are tempted to have something we lack called « Wisdom » or in the Greek « Gnosis » and it is how we lose are true life for a shiny new counterfeit

Col 1:26

Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

Col 1:27

To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

The original tempation the serpent gave was supposed to be wisdom. And the Serpents kind of wisdom puffs up the pride like nothing else!

Gen 3:5

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

It was wisdom the Serpent offered although it was foolish to leave God to pursue wisdom. It is foolishness wrapped in wisdom.  Error appearing as the Light.

Same as it was in the time in Colosse, where there were all these snake cults offering wisdom for only the intitiated ones. And so the serpent seduces us with science, false science today. Nothing new. Big equations on Einsteins blackboards that are for us common folk mysteries of the initiates.

Col 2 :18 Paul warned the believers of falling for this  religion that is used to disqualify us who have been qualified in Christ

Col 2:18

Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

These kind of people would look down on us from their ivory towers and tell us we need their wisdom. We are not to let them umpire us and calls us out. Not us who are complete in Christ!

The would try to convince us we are not good enough to be in Christ and say we are « OUT » Outside of Christ. Until we obey their false traditions and regulations, that have all been taken care of by Our loving Lord.

Thank God we can be secure and  be safe in Christ, His Body. We are called into Christ and we can be thankful because the peace Christ gave us with Him and God is bu grace.  The only umpire, the only judge is God and He is the only voice that we need to listen to! And HE cried out “Safe” not “out”

Why am I using baseball terms here. I will tell you. The two word that explain what our enemy’s servant say and what Our Lords servants say use ‘ UMPIRE”  TERMS.

In the verse 3:15  “Rule” is βραβεύω brabeuō means

1. to be a βραβεύς or umpire (see βραβεῖον).

2. to decide, determine.

3. to direct, control, rule

So peace says YOU ARE SAFE! Not was or will be but you are safe in the Body of Christ.

And this was given assurance as an antidote to the religious holier than thou gang.

Here in  verse 3:15 this same word appears but  with  “kata”which gives it a down ward judgemental air.  it is in a downward manner.   καταβραβεύω katabrabeuōe

I.             to decide as umpire against someone

II.           to defraud or beguile of the prize of victory

III.          metaph. to deprive of salvation\

SO Do not listen to these creeps that say “YOU’RE OUT!”

Col 3:15

And let the peace of Christ rule (brabeuō) in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

Col 2:18 KJV

Lets meditate a little on what these verses to the Colossians  are really telling us to do

Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not[fn] seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Col 2 :18 FSV « Let no one disqualify you, let that one who is delighting in self abasement and religous ritual for angels, which he has seen after being initiated, being vainly proud of his fleshly mind »

That is as close to the interlinear literal translation I could put into words.

Col 2:18

Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels,[fn] saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud,

The enemy uses religion to condemn those who are not condemned, to say you are lacking something when we are Compete in Christ. The religious judge you when you are made just by God. Sort of like in the Paradise the Serpent telling you, you were lacking something, like this wisdom I got to sell you.

Col 2:18

Let no one fraudulently deprive you of your prize, doing his own will in humility and worship of angels, entering into things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by the mind of his flesh,

To understand Colossians we should learn a little history of that region in Asia Minor in Paul’s time.  And how these same spirits have played with history to keep His story quiet! The same ideas are still alive and well amongst the most holier than thou and super spiritual Christians>

False humility is an evil trick that does not impress God. It is not really being humble to God at all!  But true Humility flows as a fruit of the spirit, from the Vine, the Head, Our Christ!

There is true humility and that flows from Christ! Motivated by love.  But these people were using “humbler than thou” out of pride.  They  use their guilt to control  and spiritually abuse. Making slaves of freemen who are already in the Body of Christ. We must hold fast to the head Christ!

But the gnostic teachers were strong in the Greek philosophical culture! Paul was always warning against Jewish influenced by Gnostic Platonic myths. Why? It was the enemies calculated method to subtility steer the church into a shipwreck.

For an example of how the Greek Platonic philosophy entered the Jewish world we have to remember the history.  The Persians fell to Alexander the Great and then the Mideast was influenced by the Neo platonic philosophers and even the Greek language.  These pagan ideas of pantheons and myths replaced good holy spirit inspired writing from Moses to David. It mixed and corrupted the “tradition of the elders” which Jesus had to confront Himself in the Pharisees.

The idea of the Immortal soul was introduced not by new revelation from God but by the Greek, Persian, Egyptians pagan myths.

The idea of the  soul, the Chai Nephesh, was taught by Moses as being “A living soul” But when the life of “chai” is  no longer with the Nephesh and it stops moving it is dead. Dead and the body returns to dust. Waiting resurrection on that last day.

Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10:

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Ecclesiastes 3:20:

All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

Genesis 3:19:

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Psalms 146:4:

His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

I Corinthians 15:52:

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

We look forward to Ressurection and restoration, not heaven and hell!

It was not the Scripture given to the Jews that taught that we all have an immortal spark called the soul.  That came from the school of Plato and continued to be taught. Even when the holy inspired scripture of Moses and David taught that when you stop moving and die your soul is no more.You soul is gone when you heart stops.

But one thing the all the  pagans had in common was the beleif of this myth of an eteranl soul. A soul that goes into the underworld to be judged.  They confused soul which dies with the gift of Gods own « soul » that does not. His « soul » is the only immortal one and His holy spirit is Eternal life.

I Tim 6 :16 « He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen. »

   The Pagans religons, such as the Romans, the Greek, Egyptians, the Persians, the Babylonians and all the mankind without revelation live in  darkeness. Without knowing God they  all believe in an after- life for this soul. The Bible said it ends in the grave, until the day the Ressurection comes and He Will raise every man! But they all believe at the time of death,  an angel, or demon, or hounds of hell, or a psychopomp will take you to the otherworld. That could be across the river styx, or center of the earth where the sun goes to bed (Egyptian), or some other cool myth. But God never taught this nonsense. He taught ressurection of the body. 1 Cor 15 :52

Even in Colosse there was a big influence from  Greek Gnostic myth.   They were still looking for ways to get to God buy mounting into the heavens with drugs, fasts, trances, self mutilation. But God never lest his creation, His heaven and earth are still his. It was man that left Him remember?

We still are entranced to reach for the stars. Space the final frontier and if physical travel is to difficult today we believe in astral projection.. blah blah blah

« The Colossians were always looking for ways to get to heaven and grab a piece of God for themselves »  This is the desire of all men to escape death.

There is a word used here that is not understood out of the context of the Ancient Greek culture.

The word here is translated « intruding into » and is the word in the original « embateuon «

And this word is totally changed by the word in greek « Me » meaning  « not ».  He either was seeing things because he was intitiated » or he did not see things as he was intruding in the spiritual field. But if demons are giving revelation in secret oracles and chambers they are lies. So whether the initiate could see things that were false lies. Or not see any thing true. It carries the same logical meaning. 

With the word « me » or « no’  in place some translated the phrase  « intruding into those things which he has not[fn] seen »  and with the « not » as  « going into curious and subtile speculation about things which he has seen in visions granted him; » Either way they were being decieved by false revelation in the gnostic belief system.

In the those times in the Greek Empire. They believed in : »entering the inner sanctuary after receiving the  mysteries » This was rampant in all their religion and temples. There were always priests who where initiated into the mysteries they used to keep the people in control.   What a close counterfeit the enemy designed to imitate the only true mystery which is no more a mystery!  Christ lives in all of us in Christ. Now it is revealed. We are the temple the He built!

But the religious love to keep their mysteries concealed so they can have their power over the initiates.  That is how all the secret societies and the hierarchies of Satan work. By  deceptions and heirarchies of the more intellegent abusing those underthem,

Col 2:8

Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

Col 2:9

For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;

Col 2:10

and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

The revelation Paul was giving the Colossians was directed to oppose the lies of the gnostic Greek philoosphies.

Christ here is the temple and the sanctuary where God lives. Now we are complete in Him, which is set in contrast to the empty deceit of their philosophy.

This warning comes because if you do not rest in being Complete in Christ you can get sucked into all kinds of religious nonsense trying to find God while you are already found by Him!!

This verse said BEWARE. Of what?  Being made into slaves for the enemy and carried away from your call and purpose! Distractions of  rituals and religion.  But you are already seated in Christ!

No need to let that happen

No need to look to be initiated. Take new courses to get the right formula for the spirit to go to work. No need You are Complete in HIM!  No need to fast and light the candles to get into the inner sanctum. No need to scrub yourself clean and take of your shoes at the door.  No need to fast and beat your body to a pulp!  You are already in Dad’s living room playing with Big brother.  You are home where you are in Christ!

Why did  Adam and Eve, listen to the Serpent’s wisdom, when they had it all already?  We  have it made right where you are today in Christ because of His works! GRACE!

We can stay free from any one enslaving us by « being rooted and built up in Christ »  Ole Devil we do not need any of your stupid wisdom! No more religion! No more super spiritual tricks

« the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and[fn] of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. «  AS Paul explained to the COlossians in ch 2 :3-4.

We are not to let anyone, remove us from Holding on to the Head. Because our head is Christ. And all is build all grows all is guided all is nutured by the head as Christ.

Let no one cheat you or disqualify you who where Qualified in Christ. Mad complete and all sin nailed to the cross.  Read Col 2 : 10-15 again please

We are to hang on to the Vine for dear life.  He is the head of the body.

But those who are religious and judging us are not holding onto the head. Thay need to attach again to the life of Christ. Forget the secret  false mysteries.

They are gropping in the dark but we who communicate regularly with Jesus as our Head are able to be nourished and cared for, our every need satisfied. And  so we grow in the Son.  But to let go and go back to dead religion and works is a dead end.

Col 2:19

and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.

Paul addresses this letter to the Colossians. One author said that this letter may have been for the « unbelieving Jews » or «  for the converted Greeks. He also said that the latter is probably the case and these were not « genuine » Christians since « they were not holding the head »

I do not agree with that since Colossians was adressed to

Col 1:2

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

But Paul was warning the beloved brothers and sisters in Christ not to lose their priveledges and joy for religion.

They may have believed but were being deceived of their birthrights as born a gain.

It was to these same believers that Paul said to  « Beware  lest any man steal you away » in Colossians 2 :8

Once a believer places his faith in the Faith of  Christ he is saved. No matter what he does if he truly cried out to receive Christ as Lord he was sealed. And placed into the Kingdom of God. But he must continue to hold on to the head so that he grow in Chris if he is going to mature and grow.. 

One of the best methods of discouragement is religion that judges you every move but not your heart. God knows you heart if you are His. 

He will never let you go out of his  grip.  But we can cut our self off of the vine and leave the house of Christ if we are discouraged and not built up.

If we are at risk to fall from grace by following  man’s traditions and deception of religion into the dead end of works. .

Eph 4:14

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Eph 4:15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Eph 4:16

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

We need to hear the truth spoken in love to us. We need true teachers and pastors that will remind us we have been made complete in Christ and we need look nowhere esle but to Him for all our completeness.  We need leaders that will seperate mans religion and false ritual from the the truth of Christs work, Leaders that can discern error from God’s Truth.

Tapeinophrosynē  ταπεινοφροσύνη  or humility is a beautiful thing when it is true

When the humility is not used to guilt or condemn others by judging them « further from God by their action or non action »  That is false religious humiliy

The humility of Christ was to lift other’s need over his own because He loved us.

Paul has this kind of humility as he served others placing his needs after. HIs love for others made him a servant of love.

Act 20:19

serving the Lord with all lowliness, and tears, and temptations, which happened to me through the plots of the Jews;

Eph 4:2

with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love;

True humility goes with mildness, an easiness with people and in patience we love them

These are supernatural qualities that no religious person can drum up by their inititiation rituals or confering with angels, saints, dead and familiar spirit demons. No way

But Christ gives us Himself by the spirit. He is the vine and the fruit of His spirit first flows into us providing love, then the patience to deal with situations and be humble to others. Making them first instead of being selfish. We can then have his ability to be flexible and mild to serve them best in love.

This is what it means to be part of the Vine. To hold on to the head who is Christ and let Him fill you with His spirit.

But the  religious and those so humble and proud to be self righteous be cause division and strife. But the real humility brings union and peace among men not fights.

Phl 2:3

let nothing be in the spirit of strife or vain glory, but, in lowliness of mind, each esteeming the other as more excellent than themselves;

This was the Humilty the Chirst showed us by His example. He was willing to even give up His own life for us.

Phl 2:8

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

And without this selfless humility He would not have been rewarded by God

His  perfect trust in His father allowed him to humble Himself in Joy. Know that God is never going to change, lie are fail his promise!

So we too need to Hold on to the head which is Christ, We need to look nowhere else but Chirst

We need to fellowship with Him and the Father by communication.  IN prayers of understanding and by the spirit. Revelations. And scriptural study. Seeking and listening to their voice.

We are risen so we need to keep this in mind as we seek Him and not rituals and rules made on earth. We are risen and removed from all that and placed into His Kingdom not by our works but the work Christ has accomplished because of His love for us,

Billions of Christians around the world believe that on Easter, Jesus was raised from the dead and taken up to heaven to live with God. They also believe that when they die, their own souls will go to heaven. The great irony is that this is not at all what Jesus himself believed.

Jesus did not think a person’s soul would live on after death, either to experience bliss in the presence of God above or to be tormented in the fires of hell below. As a Jew of the 1st century, Jesus did not think the soul went anywhere after death. It simply ceased to exist with the body.

Most Christians today view the soul as an immaterial essence inside the physical frame of the body; once the body dies, the soul lives on, intact, forever. That is the view handed down to us not from the Bible but from ancient Greek thinking known best from the writings of Plato.

The Bible portrays the human as a creation of God that is one unified entity: an animated body. The soul does not exist once the body dies. When God created Adam, he gathered “dust from the ground” and made it alive by breathing into it the “breath of life.” This “breath” did not exist as an independent entity (the “soul”) outside the body. It was simply what made the body alive. That is why in the Old Testament we are told that at “death,” or in the “grave,” the “pit,” or “Sheol” — all used as synonyms — no one can worship God and God no longer remembers them. Once the breath/soul left the body, the person did not and would not exist anymore

It was only many, many years after the Old Testament, in the days of Jesus, that some Jews came to see things differently. The shift in thinking arose largely because of the problem of suffering. Why is it that so many people who follow God experience such pain and misery, but others who live godless lives prosper? Is there no justice? Death cannot be the end of the story. Otherwise, how can God himself be just?

These Jews ultimately concluded that there is something to come after this life, but they did not believe, as the Greeks did, in an immortal soul that would live on, apart from the body. Their view instead developed within the Jewish framework of the unified human. Life to come would involve body and soul in tandem. How? Human bodies would be brought back to life to be rewarded or punished. There would be a bodily resurrection of the dead and eternal life would be lived here on Earth.

This was the view found among a wide array of Jews in Jesus’ day: the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls, various apocalyptic prophets, the Pharisees and regular folk. It was also the view of John the Baptist and Jesus himself.

Jesus based his preaching of the coming “kingdom of God” on this doctrine of bodily resurrection. This world had become wicked, but God was soon to bring salvation by intervening in history and destroying the forces of evil. God had originally designed a paradise for humans, a Garden of Eden. Humans had botched the arrangement, but God’s purposes would not be thwarted. Paradise would return to Earth and God’s people would inherit it — in their bodies, just as he originally planned.

This divine justice would come not only for those who happen to be alive at the time, but for all those who sided with God throughout history. They would be vindicated for their faithfulness.

Jesus urged people to repent in preparation. Some did. Most did not. Jesus’ enemies considered his teachings of coming destruction a threat to the existing social order. They had him arrested. The Roman authorities executed him for declaring that God would destroy the world that they themselves ruled.

And then came Easter. Soon after Jesus’ death, his followers came to believe that his own body had been brought back to life. For them, that meant the resurrection he had anticipated had started. God was soon to raise all people from the dead to be physically rewarded or punished. Only those who followed Jesus would be saved.

Thus began the momentous changes that would transform the Jewish beliefs of Jesus himself into the Christian beliefs about Jesus.

By the end of the 1st century, most Christian converts came from pagan rather than Jewish stock. As inhabitants of the Greco-Roman world, they brought with them their own “Greek” ways of thinking about bodies and souls, not the Jewish views of Jesus and his followers. This new generation of non-Jewish Christians continued to believe that justice would be done after death. But it would not be a bodily kingdom on Earth; it would be a spiritual kingdom in heaven above. For them, eternal life comes to souls after death, without the body. The souls of those who are not saved will also live on, in the torments of hell. This view (which first appears in two of the late writings of the New Testament, Luke and John) rapidly became the standard belief throughout all Christendom.

Jesus himself did not share these beliefs. But within a century, the vast majority of Christians believed that a soul would be judged after the body had died. Those who believed in Jesus would have eternal life, not in a bodily kingdom on Earth but in the spiritual realm above. This remains the belief of billions of people today.

WHAT IS SALVATION?

How did Jesus save us and from what?

Most Christians don’t feel like they need an answer to the question, “what is salvation?” For them, the answer is simple: getting to go to heaven instead of hell when they die. Yet, despite this being the common and majority view in modern western Evangelicalism, it isn’t true at all. Salvation never involves going to heaven, and it never involves avoiding hell after you die. This is a laughable claim for many, but throughout Scripture, salvation is never framed as going to heaven instead of hell after you die.

Many Christians have a slightly more nuanced understanding, and they center salvation around Jesus dying on the cross in their place. For them, salvation comes from saying a prayer that you believe that Jesus was crucified, thereby being forgiven of their sins so they can go to heaven and avoid hell when they die. This is mostly not true either.

Salvation is a topic that comes up all throughout the Bible, from the first book to the last. There is ample definition provided. You may be surprised to see how the Bible describes salvation versus a Sunday morning sermon. Its meaning is much more nuanced and applicable to our daily lives.

OLD TESTAMENT SALVATION

In early Jewish thought, heaven was a place solely for God and the heavenly hosts. Israel did not regard heaven as a place a human would ever inhabit. They believed the dead descended to the underworld or grave—a place called “sheol” in Hebrew (Genesis 37:35, 42:38; 1 Kings 13:31). The word “sheol” and “geber” (grave) are often used interchangeably. All people (good and bad) go to sheol when they die according to the Old Testament (Numbers 16:33). Most of the Old Testament expresses a dismal view of life after death. Job speaks of death as final (Job 10:21; 14:7-12; 16:22), as does Ecclesiastes (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6). Some psalms describe death as permanent silence (Psalms 6:5; 30:9; 88:3-5, 10-12) So when it comes to salvation, going to heaven is not an option that the Hebrew Scriptures have in view.

There are three main Hebrew words used to communicate salvation in the Old Testament. “Yasha’” means save, “yeshu’ah” means salvation, and “natsal” means rescue; all used mostly interchangeably. A few psalms seem to express hope about an afterlife (Psalms 16:10-11; 49:15; 73:24), but virtually all references to salvation in the Old Testament are about physical deliverance in life before death, not life after death.¹ The word yasha’ and its cognates are used 136 times in Psalms; almost every instance refers to rescue from disease or danger. Since ancient Israelites didn’t believe in a conscious afterlife, every reference to salvation involves deliverance in the present life.

For example, Noah and his family are “saved” from the flood (1 Peter 3:20). Later in Genesis, Jacob prays for divine intervention, saying, “save [natsal] me, I pray, from the hand of my brother…” (Genesis 32:11). When Jacob blesses his sons, he says, “I wait for your salvation [yeshu’ah], Yahweh” (Genesis 49:18 NRSV). Throughout the Old Testament, salvation usually refers to physical protection: “Yahweh your God is the one who is going with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save [yasha] you” (Deuteronomy 20:4 NASB). Most uses of yasha’ in the Old Testament refer to God’s help from foreign militaries. When people ask for salvation, they are speaking about rescue from physical dangers; they are not asking to be saved from their sins or saved after death.

SAVED FROM EGYPT

The Old Testament’s most important example of salvation is the exodus story. God provided salvation for the Hebrew people from their slavery to the empire of Egypt. With possibly the exception of the Jewish exile in Babylon, it can easily be said that the exodus out of Egypt is the most significant event of salvation in the Hebrew Scriptures. The narrative uses the main Hebrew roots for “to save” interchangeably: “I have come down to deliver [natsal] them out of the hand of the Egyptians” (Exodus 3:8 ESV); “the Lord saved [yasha’] Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians” (Exodus 14:30 ESV). The exodus is mentioned all throughout the Old Testament to remind Israel of Yahweh’s power to save them (Judges 6:7-9; 1 Samuel 12:6-8; 1 Kings 8:16; 2 Chronicles 7:21-22; Nehemiah 9:9-15; Psalms 77:15, 78:12-13, 80:8-9, 105:37-38, 106:8-10, 136:13-15; Ezekiel 20:9-11; Daniel 9:15-16).

When the Jews are conquered by Babylon and thrown into exile, Jeremiah describes it as an “undoing” of the exodus, when they are enslaved rather than delivered (Jeremiah 7:21-34; 11:6-17; 34:12-22). He also envisioned a day when the exiles would experience a new exodus and be returned to the land (Jeremiah16:10-21). According to ancient Israelite theology, God blesses those who obey the law, so when Israel is defeated by their enemies, their reasonable conclusion is that they had been unfaithful to their covenant with God. In these times of defeat, they petition God for salvation by asking for forgiveness. A restored relationship with God (forgiveness) provided the basis for petitioning him to intervene (salvation). We can see this pattern prominently in the book of Judges and all the other historical narratives.

The Israelites’ laws and traditions presented a means for maintaining a relationship with God, but they never played a direct role in their idea of salvation. Instead, by following the Law of Moses, they could continue to be saved from threats like droughts, infertility, and foreign military invasions (Leviticus 26:12-19; Deuteronomy 28:14-17, 40-42). As Israel eventually finds themselves conquered by foreign empires, the prophets speak of salvation, referring to the nation’s restoration in the present life. The words for salvation occur 100 times in the Prophets, and the focus is consistently on physical survival.

Overall, the Old Testament hope for salvation was for national salvation. Israel’s salvation was associated with a variety of ideas:

• a messianic leader or a figure like the Servant of the Lord;
• restoration of the Davidic monarchy;
• reunification of Israel and Judah;
• a second exodus—a return to the land;
• an age of international power, peace, and agricultural blessings;
• knowledge of God spreading to all other nations;
• the restoration of heaven and earth, in animals and humans;
• forgiveness and a new covenant in which God dwells with the people.

In all of these conceptions, hopes for national salvation concern life on this side of death. While the Old Testament never fully realized any of these hopes, the New Testament would realize them all while keeping the same understanding of what salvation truly means.

MESSIANIC SALVATION

The Gospel accounts continue in the tradition of the Old Testament by using the word “save” in reference to physical healing, rescue from danger, or freedom from demonic spiritual oppression. The Gospel accounts record the biography of Jesus Christ, the anticipated Messiah who would save Israel. In these four books, the Greek words for save and salvation (sōzō, sōtēria, & sōtēr) are used 57 times.² Sōzō often means to deliver from physical danger (Matthew 8:25), to heal an illness (Matthew 9:21; Mark 5:22, 6:56), to free from an evil spirit (Luke 8:36), or to save from sins (Matthew 1:21). Jesus defends healing on the Sabbath by asking whether it is lawful to save (sōzō) life on the Sabbath (Luke 6:9). When Jesus is being crucified, people mock him for saving (sōzō) other people but being unable to save (sōzō) himself (Luke 23:35). Jesus, of course, did save himself—three days later.

Clearly, salvation in the Gospels doesn’t mean going to heaven. Instead, something far more important was taking place, the Old Testament hope for salvation was being fulfilled in every way by Jesus:

• Jesus came as the Messiah to lead God’s people (a Messiah who teaches people how to live);
• Jesus came as King in the line of David (King over the entire earth);
• Jesus reunified Israel and Judah (as now there is no dividing line between peoples);
• Jesus led people through a second exodus (out of empires like Rome);
• Jesus started a new age of peace (where war is practiced no more);
• Jesus tasked his disciples to spread the Gospel of the Kingdom to all nations (and they did);
• Jesus was the first fruit of the resurrection (and the renewal of all creation);
• Jesus forgave all people and established a new covenant (one that made the former obsolete).

Every one of these fulfilments centers around the Kingdom of God. Ultimately, because national salvation is in view for the majority of the Bible, the primary way that God saves us is through the Kingship of Jesus and the arrival of his Kingdom. While being “saved” or “salvation” are mentioned 57 times in the Gospel accounts, but the “Kingdom of God” is mentioned 125 times. The Kingdom is what Jesus talked about more than anything. The Kingdom of God is simply the physical space on earth where Jesus is ruling—a nation where God’s will is done. Therefore, in New Testament theology, salvation is an escape from the pagan nation (or empire) you were born into and an exodus and a rebirth into Christ’s nation.

Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.” The disciples were amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

Here in Mark, we can see that entering the Kingdom of God is what brings salvation.

SALVATION IN THE GOSPEL ACCOUNTS

The Gospel of the Kingdom—which brings salvation—is one of social transformation and restoration for the entire world. Before Jesus was even born, his mother proclaimed how God would save through him. She states that Jesus will bring down rulers from their thrones, lift up the humble, feed the hungry, and send away the rich (Luke 1:52-53). When Jesus kicked off his public ministry, he starts by reading the scroll of Isaiah, claiming that he was the new ruler that would bring good news to the poor, proclaim freedom for prisoners, provide sight for the blind, and set the oppressed free (Luke 4:18-19).

Jesus teaches everyone what life in his Kingdom looks like in his “Sermon on the Mount,” where those who are persecuted belong, where peacemakers will be called his children, and where the meek will inherit the earth (Matthew 53-12). He tells his followers to give to the needy, to not resist evil people, to love their enemies, to not make pledges, to not judge others, to not worry, and most importantly, to seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 5:1-7:29). He concludes by saying that if anyone does what he says, they will be saved, but anyone who doesn’t will experience calamity (Matthew 7:24-27).

The salvation that the Gospel accounts describe is not individualistic, that only occurs at merely one moment, like at the cross; rather it is the culmination of God’s redeeming work through King Jesus on behalf of all of creation. Mark says that ‘Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Gospel. “The time promised by God has come at last! The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Gospel!”‘ (Mark 1:14-15). “Repent” in Greek is the word “metanoia,” which means to “think differently.” Jesus was starting a new age of God’s Kingdom (characterized by justice, forgiveness, health, love, and peace) that requires its citizens to turn away from participating in the current, evil age of empire (characterized by injustice, inequality, sickness, idolatry, and war).

ALLEGIANT, LOVING, SALVATION

Jesus went around performing miracles, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, freeing the oppressed, and displaying power over death. Scripture constantly equates these actions with salvation. These are all actions of a King who is taking back what rightfully belongs to him. Jesus didn’t have to wait for the cross to bring salvation, and he didn’t have to wait for the cross to forgive sins (Luke 5:19-20, 7:47-48). Jesus has always had the authority to forgive sins (Luke 5:25), but at the cross, he forgives everyone in the entire world (1 John 2:2). Now, anyone who has faith (or, more accurately, allegiance) can be saved (Luke 7:50). We must think differently and turn away (repent) from our sins and this fallen world and have allegiance (faith) in the one true King in order to experience salvation. This saving allegiance to Jesus is so important because it is what is required for being a part of his Kingdom. That is why Jesus teaches that rulers of the world cannot be part of his nation, instead, entry is only possible through suffering servanthood (Mark 10:42-45).

In Luke 19, Jesus meets a Jewish man named Zacchaeus, who had given his allegiance to the empire of Rome. He had succumbed to the lure of wealth to the degree that he became a tax collector. After Zacchaeus had heard the teachings of Jesus, he repented of his ways and vowed to give half of his possessions to the poor. Jesus responded by saying, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” (Luke 19:8-10). Jesus doesn’t mention the cross, he doesn’t mention sacrifice, he doesn’t mention substitution—he simply declares that Zacchaeus is saved. We can see how he is saved: he participated in the greed of empire, repented, and gave his wealth to the poor. His mind was transformed into a mind that upheld the values of God’s Kingdom, and therefore he was saved.

An expert in the Law of Moses asked Jesus what someone has to do to have eternal life, and he replied by saying you must love God and love your neighbor (Luke 10:25-28).³ They both agreed on who “God” was, but they had different understandings of who a “neighbor” was. Jesus clarified with a parable story in which a Jewish man was beaten and left half dead. A priest and a Levite passed by and didn’t help him, but a Samaritan did. Culturally, priests and Levites were viewed as Godly men, while Samaritans were viewed as enemy scum. Jesus explains that the Samaritan in the parable is what a neighbor looks like, and he tells them to share in the enemy love that was on display. “What must we do to be saved?” Jesus replies, “love your enemies.” No mention of a cosmic exchange achieved on the cross, only the example of loving and blessing your enemies as the means for salvation. This is so crucial because loving your neighbor, which includes your enemies, is necessary for participating in the good news of God’s Kingdom which brings salvation.
