Jésus s’est-il faufilé hors du ciel contre la volonté de son Père pour venir mourir pour nos péchés ? A-t-il distrait le Saint-Esprit puis s’est-il éclipsé de sa propre initiative pour verser son sang pour notre pardon ? Bien sûr que non ! Pourtant, à en juger par certains des commentaires que je reçois sur ce site, il est clair que certains pensent que Dieu le Fils et Dieu le Père jouent au bon et au mauvais flic avec l’humanité. Dieu le Père est en colère contre nous à cause de notre péché, mais Jésus se tient entre nous pour nous protéger de la colère de son Père.

Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas dans cette image ? Tout ! Elle suggère que Dieu le Fils et Dieu le Père ont des natures différentes, que l’un nous aime inconditionnellement, mais que l’autre ne peut pas voir au-delà de notre péché. Même si vous ne connaissez pas votre Bible, vous pouvez probablement voir à quel point c’est ridicule.

Hébreux 1:3 nous dit que Jésus est la “représentation exacte” de la nature de Dieu. Il est l’image visible du Dieu invisible (Col 1,15). Jésus a dit : “Celui qui m’a vu a vu le Père” (Jn 14,9). Si vous voulez savoir comment est Dieu le Père, regardez Jésus. Ce sont des personnes différentes, mais elles partagent le même caractère, le même cœur et le même ADN spirituel. L’Évangile nous dit que Jésus a été envoyé par Dieu le Père et qu’il a reçu le pouvoir de Dieu le Saint-Esprit pour sauver le monde. Contrairement à ce que vous avez pu entendre, Dieu le Père, le Fils et le Saint-Esprit sont tout à fait sur la même longueur d’onde lorsqu’il s’agit de votre pardon.

Un chrétien est une personne qui a reçu le don du pardon de Dieu. En faisant confiance à la grâce de Dieu, il fait aujourd’hui l’expérience de ce que Dieu a offert il y a 2000 ans, à savoir le salut par l’œuvre achevée de la croix. Dans la première et la deuxième partie de cette étude, nous avons examiné six raisons pour lesquelles les chrétiens n’ont jamais besoin de confesser leurs péchés pour être pardonnés. Peut-être confessez-vous vos péchés parce que vous n’êtes pas certain d’être pardonné. Vous savez que Jésus est mort pour vos péchés, mais vous pensez peut-être que Dieu tient des registres et que le Saint-Esprit vous convainc et vous amène à faire des œuvres de confession. Rien n’est plus éloigné de la vérité. Voici deux autres raisons pour lesquelles ceux qui ont été pardonnés n’ont pas besoin de se confesser pour être pardonnés :

7. Dieu choisit d’oublier votre péché

“Car je serai miséricordieux envers leur iniquité, et je ne me souviendrai plus de leurs péchés ni de leurs actes illicites.” (He 8:12)

La confession implique généralement de parler à Dieu de nos péchés (comme s’il ne le savait pas !). Mais pourquoi voudrions-nous lui rappeler des choses qu’il a choisi d’oublier ? D’une manière ou d’une autre, nous avons adhéré à l’idée que Dieu est au ciel et qu’il enregistre tous nos péchés sur des DVD et que, le jour du Jugement dernier, il nous mettra dans l’embarras en diffusant les films de nos erreurs. Mais ce n’est pas ce que dit la Bible ! Dieu ne nous impute pas nos fautes (2 Cor 5:19). Il s’occupe de la réconciliation, pas de la honte.

Lorsque vous vous confessez pour être pardonné, vous vous imputez des péchés que Dieu lui-même ne compte pas. En d’autres termes, vous n’agissez pas comme votre Père céleste.

Sous l’alliance de la loi, il était important de garder une trace de chaque péché et d’en rendre compte, mais la nouvelle alliance est caractérisée par un oubli plein d’amour (Jérémie 31:34). Dieu a-t-il soudainement changé d’avis après la croix ? Sa mémoire est-elle devenue soudainement défaillante ? Non, Dieu ne change jamais. Il est le même aujourd’hui, hier et pour toujours. La Bible parle de l’alliance de la loi comme d’un arrangement qui se fane et qui est donc temporaire (2 Co 3:11). Bien que Dieu ait choisi d’entrer en relation avec l’homme pendant un certain temps par le biais de cette alliance fautive afin que nous puissions apprendre la gravité du péché et voir notre besoin de Jésus, sa propre nature est différente. Il nous a toujours aimés (Jérémie 31:3) et l’amour ne tient pas compte des fautes (1 Co 13:5).

Sur la croix, Dieu le Père a fait de Jésus un péché pour nous afin que nous devenions sa justice (2 Co 5,21). Jésus n’a pas agi seul mais en parfaite soumission à la volonté de son Père (Lc 22,42). Le Père a eu l’idée de vous pardonner ; il a fait de Jésus un péché pour que vous deveniez justes. Parce que Dieu le Père est en relation avec vous par l’intermédiaire de son Fils sans péché, il choisit de ne plus se souvenir de vos péchés et de vos actes illégaux.

Pourquoi Dieu a-t-il fait tout cela ? Parce qu’il est amour et qu’il nous aime. Car Dieu le Père a tellement aimé le monde pécheur qu’il a envoyé son Fils unique. Lorsque vous verrez le cœur d’amour du Père derrière l’œuvre rédemptrice du Fils, vous n’aurez plus peur du péché. Vous ne vous inquiéterez plus de ces DVD sur le péché, car Dieu n’en fabrique pas. Lorsque vous commencerez à saisir l’amour du Père, vous envisagerez même le jour du jugement avec audace (1 Jn 4, 17). D’où vient cette confiance ? Elle vient du fait que nous avons “la grâce, la miséricorde et la paix de Dieu le Père et de Jésus-Christ, le Fils du Père” (2 Jn 1:3).

8. Le Saint-Esprit ne vous convainc pas

“Le Saint-Esprit nous rend aussi témoignage à ce sujet… ‘Je ne me souviendrai plus de leurs péchés ni de leurs actes illicites’.” (Hébreux 10:15,17)

Certains croyants se sentent impressionnés de confesser leurs péchés parce qu’ils pensent que le Saint-Esprit les convainc. Mais ce n’est pas le cas. Comment le Saint-Esprit pourrait-il nous convaincre de quelque chose dont Il choisit de ne pas se souvenir ? Regardez ce qu’Il dit : “Je ne me souviendrai plus de leurs péchés ni de leurs actes illicites.” Vous pouvez prendre ces mots à la banque ! Ils sont la vérité et la vie. Dieu le Fils est mort pour faire disparaître le péché. À cause de ce que Jésus a fait, ni Dieu le Père (Hé 8:12) ni Dieu le Saint-Esprit (Hé 10:17) ne se souviennent plus de tes péchés. Si le Saint-Esprit vous condamnait, la divinité serait une maison divisée.

Vous pouvez dire : “Je sais que j’ai péché parce que ma conscience a été piquée. N’est-ce pas la conviction du Saint-Esprit ?” Non. Vous êtes-vous déjà demandé comment vous savez que vous avez péché ? La plupart des gens ont une connaissance innée du bien et du mal à cause de ce qui s’est passé dans le jardin d’Eden. Mais là où cette boussole morale est rouillée, la loi intervient avec force pour trouver la faute. “Je n’aurais pas connu le péché si ce n’était par la loi” (Rm 7,7). Si vous vous sentez condamné, n’accusez pas le Saint-Esprit ! C’est la loi qui vous condamne. Certains essaient de s’en sortir en distinguant la conviction de la condamnation. Ils disent que la conviction est bonne et vient de Dieu, mais que la condamnation est mauvaise et vient du diable. Mais si nous parlons de péché, il n’y a pas d’écritures qui soutiennent cette distinction. Le mot “condamner”, que l’on trouve dans la traduction NIV de Jean 16:8, signifie littéralement réfuter, trouver une faute et demander des comptes. C’est ce que la loi a été conçue pour faire (2 Co 3:9), afin que vous puissiez être conduits à Jésus et recevoir son don de non condamnation (Rm 8:1).

En tant qu’expression de son amour et de sa miséricorde, le Saint-Esprit convainc le monde du péché d’incrédulité. Mais la seule chose dont il “convainc” les chrétiens, ou plutôt dont il les convainc, est leur justice (Jn 16, 8-10). Lorsque vous péchez, votre conscience peut vous condamner, la loi peut vous condamner, et l’Inquisition espagnole peut vous condamner. Mais pendant que toutes ces condamnations ont lieu, le Saint-Esprit est là pour vous rappeler que vous êtes dans le droit chemin en Christ. Vos actes justes ne vous rendent pas justes, pas plus que vos actes injustes ne vous rendent injustes. Seul le Christ vous rend juste. Si vous écoutez votre péché, vous penserez que vous êtes une marchandise endommagée, capable de tout gâcher. Mais si vous écoutez le Saint-Esprit, il vous dira que vous êtes aussi juste que Jésus et capable de vivre correctement. Il ne s’agit pas d’un défi pour vivre correctement par la force de la volonté – le Saint-Esprit n’encouragera jamais un trip de chair. C’est un appel à continuer à vivre en Christ de la même manière que vous avez commencé – par la foi (Col 2:6). Écoutez vos péchés et vous finirez en victime, mais laissez-vous conduire par l’Esprit et vous serez plus que vainqueur !

Dieu ne cherche pas les fautes

Jésus n’a pas quitté le ciel en douce pour une mission secrète de miséricorde et Dieu n’a pas changé d’avis après la croix. Ton Père céleste ne cherche pas à faire des erreurs. Le Saint-Esprit non plus.

Lorsque vous confessez pour être pardonné, vous essayez essentiellement de vous rendre suffisamment bon pour Dieu. Vous dites : “J’ai fait une erreur, mais je peux la réparer”. Eh bien, vous avez à moitié raison ! Mais vous vous trompez vous-même si vous pensez que vous pouvez réparer ce que le péché a brisé. Jésus est mort pour libérer nos esprits des actes qui mènent à la mort (Hé 9:14) et confesser pour être pardonné est un acte mort.

La hache du pardon

Avez-vous déjà remarqué comment Jésus s’est mis à pardonner à des gens qui ne demandaient pas le pardon et ne le méritaient pas ?

On lui amène un homme paralysé. Tout le monde guette la guérison physique, mais Jésus dit : “Prends courage, mon fils ; tes péchés sont pardonnés” (Mt 9:2).

Une femme prise en flagrant délit d’adultère lui est amenée pour qu’il la juge. Jésus a dit de manière célèbre que les personnes qui enfreignent la loi risquent les flammes de l’enfer (Mt 5,29) et cette femme est une véritable transgresseuse de loi. Mais au lieu de ramasser des pierres, Jésus dit : ” Je ne te condamne pas ” (Jn 8, 11).

Pourquoi Jésus a-t-il agi ainsi ? Pourquoi a-t-il pardonné aux malades et aux pécheurs ?

Parce que si le péché est la racine des problèmes de l’homme, alors le pardon est la hache. Une fois que Jésus s’est occupé de la racine, il s’est occupé du fruit. L’homme paralysé a été guéri. La femme adultère a reçu le pouvoir d’aller et de ne plus pécher.

Noël est le moment où nous célébrons les bons cadeaux de Dieu incarnés par son Fils. Parmi les nombreux cadeaux que Dieu nous a offerts, le pardon est le premier. C’est le cadeau qui déverrouille tous les autres cadeaux.

Avez-vous besoin de guérison ? Prenez courage – vos péchés sont pardonnés ! Si Jésus a porté vos péchés, il a aussi porté vos maladies (Is 53,4). En Christ, vous avez été pardonné du péché et libéré de tous ses effets, y compris la maladie. Cependant, si vous ne savez pas avec certitude que vous avez été pardonné, vous aurez du mal à recevoir la guérison. Vous pouvez même penser que vous méritez votre maladie ou, pire, que c’est Dieu qui vous a rendu malade.

Le pardon est le cadeau dont tout le monde a besoin, mais vous ne le recevrez jamais si vous pensez que vous devez faire quelque chose pour l’obtenir. Dans la première partie de cette étude, nous avons examiné trois raisons pour lesquelles les chrétiens ne peuvent jamais gagner le pardon de Dieu par la confession. Dans le billet d’aujourd’hui, nous allons examiner trois autres raisons pour lesquelles les chrétiens n’ont jamais besoin de se confesser pour être pardonnés.

Avant que vous ne m’écriviez pour me dire que vous trouvez la confession utile et libératrice, permettez-moi de répéter que je ne suis pas contre la confession. Il est bon d’être ouvert et transparent sur nos faiblesses et nos manquements. Ce à quoi je m’oppose, c’est le mensonge selon lequel les chrétiens doivent se confesser, ou faire quoi que ce soit, pour conserver leur pardon. Si vous confessez systématiquement pour être pardonné, vous désobéissez en fait à Dieu et vous maudissez ce qu’il a béni. Au lieu d’être un tremplin vers votre délivrance et votre guérison, la Bible enseigne que ce genre de confession va en fait renforcer le péché et vous donner la mort.

Le remède à tout mensonge est la vérité. Voici trois autres promesses merveilleuses concernant votre pardon :

4. Vous avez été pardonné complètement pour tous les temps

Mais cet homme, après avoir offert un seul sacrifice pour les péchés pour toujours, s’est assis à la droite de Dieu. (Hébreux 10:12)

La mort de Jésus sur la croix était un sacrifice unique offert pour tous les temps. Il était parfaitement parfait à tous égards et il n’y a rien que l’on puisse faire pour l’améliorer. Ceux qui prennent 1 Jean 1:9 comme justification pour essayer de gagner ce qui nous a déjà été donné, doivent faire plus attention à ce que Jean dit : le sang de Jésus nous purifie de “tout péché” (1:7) et nous purifie de “toute iniquité” (1:9). Tout signifie tout. “Tout péché” comprend les péchés que nous n’avons pas encore commis et tous les péchés que nous n’avons jamais confessés.

Jésus est allé sur la croix en tant que représentant de l’humanité sans péché. Dans son dernier souffle, Dieu le Fils a demandé à Dieu le Père de nous pardonner (Lc 23,34). Puis, ayant pleinement satisfait aux exigences de la loi qui s’opposait à nous, et ayant forgé une nouvelle alliance dans son sang, Jésus a déclaré “tout est accompli” et a rendu l’esprit. Son œuvre rédemptrice achevée, Jésus est maintenant assis à la droite de Dieu, attendant que ses saints se lèvent hardiment dans leur pardon et mettent ses ennemis – la maladie, la pauvreté, l’oppression – sous leurs pieds et sous les siens.

Jésus ne retournera jamais à la croix. Si vous péchez aujourd’hui, il ne retournera pas au Calvaire demain. Lui demander de te pardonner à nouveau revient à dire que son premier sacrifice n’était pas suffisant – que tu as vraiment besoin qu’Il remonte sur la croix. C’est honteux (Hébreux 6:6), mais “nous avons confiance en des choses meilleures dans votre cas” (Hébreux 6:9). Réjouissez-vous que Son sacrifice unique ait tout payé et que vous soyez pardonné pour l’éternité. Lorsque vous péchez, devinez quoi – vous êtes toujours pardonné ! La grâce de Dieu est plus grande que votre péché. Je n’encourage pas le péché et si vous choisissez de vivre dans le péché, alors vous ne connaissez pas la grâce de Dieu qui nous apprend à dire non au péché. Mais si tu as confiance en Jésus et en son œuvre achevée, alors sois assuré que rien, ni dans le présent ni dans l’avenir, ni aucune puissance, ni la vie ni la mort, ne peut te séparer du pardon de Dieu. Alléluia !

5. Vous avez été pardonné en fonction de la richesse de la grâce de Dieu

En lui, nous avons la rédemption par son sang, le pardon des péchés, selon la richesse de sa grâce. (Eph 1:7)

Quelle est la mesure limitative du pardon de Dieu ? Est-ce notre performance ? Est-ce l’état de notre confession ? Non ! Nous sommes pardonnés selon la richesse de la grâce de Dieu. Dieu n’est pas avare de sa grâce. Comment savons-nous que Dieu est gracieux ? Parce qu’il nous a pardonné et que son pardon est un don à 100%. Si vous devez faire quelque chose pour l’obtenir, alors ce n’est plus un don mais une obligation, et Dieu ne vous doit rien.

Jésus a pardonné au paralytique avant que l’homme n’ait prononcé un seul mot. Il a pardonné à l’adultère qui était sans voix à cause du péché. L’un n’a rien dit et l’autre ne pouvait rien dire, pourtant Jésus les a pardonnés tous les deux. Jésus a pardonné pour montrer qu’il avait l’autorité de pardonner. Le pardon est son affaire, sa décision, son initiative et son cadeau pour nous. La seule chose que vous ayez à faire est de le recevoir, et la seule façon de ne pas le recevoir est d’essayer de le gagner par la confession ou d’autres œuvres mortes.

6. Vos péchés ont disparu depuis longtemps

Mais maintenant, une fois à la fin des temps, il a paru pour effacer le péché par son propre sacrifice. (He 9:26b)

Le mot “pardonner” signifie littéralement “renvoyer”. Votre péché n’a pas simplement été oublié, il a été aboli (AMP), mis de côté (ASV), et supprimé (GNB). Dieu n’a pas non plus éloigné vos péchés de la même manière que vous mettez vos ordures dans une poubelle près de la porte de derrière – à proximité et avec une odeur nauséabonde. Il les a éloignés de vous comme l’est de l’ouest (Ps 103,12). Si vous deviez aller à la recherche de vos péchés, vous ne les trouveriez pas. Ils ont disparu ! Ils ont tous été effacés (Is 44:22).

Vous vous demandez peut-être : mais qu’en est-il du péché que j’ai commis ce matin ? Comme tous vos péchés, celui-ci a été traité à la croix. Il n’a pas été enregistré comme une marque noire à côté de votre nom, car Dieu n’a pas pour mission d’imputer le péché (Rm 4,8).

Dieu a mieux à faire que de compter les péchés des hommes contre eux (2 Cor 5:19). C’est dans la nature humaine de compter les points, mais ce n’est pas la nature de Dieu. Dieu est amour et l’amour ne tient pas compte des fautes (1 Co 13,5). Votre Père n’est pas un chercheur de fautes. Si vous l’interrogez sur le péché de ce matin, il vous répondra : “Quel péché ? Je n’ai aucune trace de ce péché. Arrêtez de le chercher et regardez vers Jésus.”

Vous aviez bien un problème de péché, mais Dieu s’en est occupé en le clouant à la croix (Rm 6,6). Cette circoncision de votre vieille nature n’a pas été faite par la main de l’homme, mais par le Christ lui-même (Col 2:11). Il vous a été donné une nouvelle nature avec de nouveaux désirs. En renouvelant votre esprit, vous verrez que même si le péché est destructeur et qu’il vaut mieux l’éviter, il ne peut pas toucher son amour pour vous. Dieu est tout à fait capable de s’occuper de votre péché et la hache de son pardon a déjà été posée à la racine de ce mauvais arbre !

Jésus – et non la confession – est le remède à la condamnation

Ce qui est étonnant avec Jésus, c’est qu’il nous pardonne à l’avance. Nous “allons et ne péchons plus”, non pas pour nous libérer de la condamnation, mais parce que nous sommes libérés de la condamnation. Le secret pour vaincre le péché ne consiste pas à faire des promesses que nous ne pouvons pas tenir, mais à savoir que Jésus croit en nous ! Arrêtez de vous examiner et examinez-Le ! Il est tout à fait merveilleux. Arrêtez de confesser vos péchés et confessez Jésus votre Rédempteur. Confessez qu’Il est votre sagesse de Dieu – votre pardon, votre justice et votre sainteté (1 Cor 1:30).

The axe of forgiveness

Have you ever noticed how Jesus went around forgiving people who neither asked for forgiveness nor deserved it?

A paralyzed man is brought to him. Everyone watches for the physical healing but Jesus says, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven” (Mt 9:2).

A woman caught in adultery is brought to him for judgment. Jesus has famously said that law-breakers are in danger of hell-fire (Mt 5:29) and this woman is a bona fide law-breaker. But instead of picking up rocks Jesus says, “I don’t condemn you” (Jn 8:11).

Why did Jesus do it? Why did he forgive the sick and the sinful?

Because if sin is the root of man’s problems, then forgiveness is the axe. Once Jesus had dealt with the root, he dealt with the fruit. The paralyzed man was healed. The adulteress was empowered to go and sin no more.

Christmas is the time when we celebrate God’s good gifts embodied in his Son. Of the many gifts God has given us, forgiveness is the first. It is the gift that unlocks all the other gifts.

Do you need healing? Take heart – your sins are forgiven! If Jesus has borne your sins, he is has borne your sicknesses as well (Is 53:4). In Christ you have been forgiven of sin and set free from all its effects including sickness. However, if you don’t know for sure that you have been forgiven, then you will have a hard time receiving healing. You may even think that you deserve your sickness or, worse, that God made you sick.

Forgiveness is the gift that everyone needs, but you will never receive it if you think you have to do something to get it. In Part 1 of this study, we looked at three reasons why Christians can never earn God’s forgiveness through confession. In today’s post we will look at three more reasons why Christians never need to confess-to-be-forgiven.

Before you write in and tell me that you find confession helpful and liberating, let me reiterate that I am not against confession. It is good to be open and transparent about our weaknesses and failings. What I am opposed to is the lie that says Christians must confess, or do anything, to maintain their forgiveness. If you routinely confess-to-be-forgiven you’re actually disobeying God and cursing what He has blessed. Instead of being a stepping stone to your deliverance and healing, the Bible teaches that this sort of confession will actually empower sin and minister death to you.

The remedy for any lie is the truth. Here are three more wonderful promises regarding your forgiveness:

4. You were forgiven completely for all time

But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God. (Heb 10:12)

Jesus’ death on the cross was a once-off sacrifice offered for all time. It was perfectly perfect in every respect and there is nothing you can do to improve upon it. Those who take 1 John 1:9 as their justification for trying to earn what we’ve already been given, need to pay more careful attention to what John is saying: the blood of Jesus purifies us from “all sin” (1:7) and cleanses us from “all unrighteousness” (1:9). All means all. “All sin” includes the sins we haven’t done yet and all the sins we have never confessed.

Jesus went to the cross as humanity’s sinless representative. With His dying breath God the Son asked God the Father to forgive us (Lk 23:34). Then having fully satisfied the requirements of the law that stood against us, and having forged a new covenant in His blood, Jesus declared “it is finished” and gave up His spirit. His redemptive work complete, Jesus now sits at the right hand of God waiting for His saints to rise up boldly in their forgiven-ness and put His enemies – sickness, poverty, oppression – under their feet and His.

Jesus will never go to the cross again. If you sin today, He is not going back to Calvary tomorrow. Asking Him to forgive you again is like saying His first sacrifice was not enough – that you really need Him to get back up on the cross. This is disgraceful (Heb 6:6), but “we are confident of better things in your case” (Heb 6:9). Rejoice that His one-time sacrifice paid for it all and you are eternally forgiven. When you sin, guess what – you are still forgiven! God’s grace is greater than your sin. I’m not encouraging sin and if you are choosing to live in sin then you are unacquainted with the grace of God that teaches us to say no to sin. But if you trust in Jesus and His finished work, then rest assured that nothing in the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither life nor death, can separate you from God’s forgiveness. Hallelujah!

5. You were forgiven in accordance with the riches of God’s grace

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace. (Eph 1:7)

What is the limiting measure of God’s forgiveness? Is it our performance? Is the state of our confession? No! We are forgiven according to the riches of God’s grace. God is not stingy with grace. How do we know God is gracious? Because He has forgiven us and His forgiveness is 100% a gift. If you have to do something to get it, then it is no longer a gift but an obligation, and God owes you nothing.

Jesus forgave the paralytic before the man had uttered a single word. He forgave the adulterer who was speechless with sin. One didn’t say anything and the other couldn’t say anything, yet Jesus forgave them both. Jesus forgave to demonstrate that He had authority to forgive. Forgiveness is His business, His decision, His initiative, and His gift to us. The only thing you have to do is receive it, and the only way you won’t receive it is if you try to earn it through confession or other dead works.

6. Your sins are long gone

But now, once at the end of the ages, he has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. (Heb 9:26b)

The word “forgive” literally means to send away. You sin hasn’t merely been overlooked, it has been abolished (AMP), put away (ASV), and removed (GNB). Neither has God put away your sins in the same way that you might put your rubbish in a bin by the back door – close by and smelly. He has removed them from you as far as the east is from the west (Ps 103:12). If you were to go looking for your sins, you wouldn’t find them. They’re gone! They’ve all been blotted out (Is 44:22).

You may ask, but what about the sin I did just this morning? Like all your sin this one was dealt with at the cross. It was not recorded as a black mark next to your name because God is not in the business of imputing sin (Rms 4:8).

God’s got better things to do than count men’s sins against them (2 Cor 5:19). It is human nature to keep score but this is not God’s nature. God is love and love keeps no record of wrongs (1 Co 13:5). Your Father is not a fault-finder. If you were to ask Him about this morning’s sin, He would say, “What sin? I have no record of that sin. Stop looking for it and look to Jesus.”

You did have a sin problem, but God dealt with it by nailing it to the cross (Rm 6:6). This circumcision of your old nature was not done by the hand of man, but by Christ Himself (Col 2:11). You have been given a new nature with new desires. As you renew your mind you will come to see that although sin is destructive and best avoided, it cannot touch His love for you. God is quite able to deal with your sin and the axe of His forgiveness has already been laid at the root of that bad tree!

Jesus – not confession – is the cure for condemnation

The amazing thing about Jesus is that He forgives us in advance. We “go and sin no more,” not to get free from condemnation, but because we are free from condemnation. The secret to overcoming sin is not found in making promises we can’t keep, but in knowing that Jesus believes in us! Stop examining yourself and examine Him! He’s altogether wonderful. Stop confessing your sins and confess Jesus your Redeemer. Confess that He is your wisdom from God – your forgiven-ness, your righteousness and your holiness (1 Cor 1:30).

Religion is an endless car race and I have a trackside seat. I smell the fumes of religious ambition, and I hear the sickening crunch of condemnation. The religious race goes on and on, and I get to watch people slamming into the hard wall of rules and unforgiveness.

I don’t particularly want to watch this, but Jesus said to help the hurting, and many of them are lying broken on the religious racetrack.

Religion hurts people. The old religion of rules and regulations ministers condemnation and death. Hopefully you know this.

But did you know that religion can also make you stupid?

But their minds were made dull… Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. (2 Corinthians 3:14-15)

The word for dull in this passage means a kind of stone. Live by the ministry carved on tablets of rock, and you’ll end up with rocks in your head.

Rule-based religion will give you a dull mind and a veiled heart.

I see proof of this every day in my message box. Consider this question I was recently asked:

Paul, I have been told that divorce is a sin. I understand that it was not God’s will for me to leave my first wife. Should I leave my current wife and our three kids and try and reconcile?

So let me get this straight. You think divorce is a sin and the solution is to do it again?

It’s a dumb question, but I would never mock the person who asked it. In fact, I rejoice that they brought their question to me and not to some rock-headed law-preacher. (If you’re wondering, I told the person to stay married.)

We all make mistakes and I’m all for taking responsibility and cleaning up our messes. But, and I say this with love, you’re as dumb as Adam if you think you are the remedy to your sin.

The bad news is your sin is too great for you to handle. The good news is that Jesus is greater than your sin.

Here’s another example of religious stupidity: “God raised up ISIS to accomplish his purposes.”

A certain church has been teaching this and I’m glad most of you aren’t buying it. But some people are, and that’s sad. Some people are saying the same thing about Covid.

God is good; ISIS and Covid are bad. They have nothing in common.

And don’t fall for that religious chestnut that says God “allows” ISIS in his sovereignty. Religion says God is in control and therefore he bears some responsibility for everything that happens, but that’s not what the Bible says.

God is good and everything he does and everything he gives is good. I know that’s a tricky piece of theology but it’s worth remembering.

Religion makes us look stupid to outsiders. When unbelievers hear us debating these things they shake their heads in disbelief. Then when they visit our churches we say “Thanks for coming, but don’t touch our crackers and grape juice.” More stupidity.

How to respond to religious stupidity

There are two ways to respond to religious stupidity. First, we should call it out, as I’m doing here and as Paul did in his letter to the Galatians:

You stupid Galatians! … How can you be so stupid? Do you think that by yourself you can complete what God’s Spirit started in you? (Galatians 3:1,3, CEV)

Sheesh, Paul, tell us what you really think.

“Let your conversation be full of grace,” said the one who called the Galatians stupid. We who walk in grace are sometimes nicer than Jesus, but it’s healthy to laugh at religious stupidity. Some have even suggested that laughter is a fitting response to ISIS.

The One who sits enthroned in heaven laughs at his enemies and religious stupidity is his enemy and your enemy.

Many is the time I’ve laughed at something stupid I once believed in. Such laughter is liberating. (If you’re open to it, I encourage you to share your former religious views below so we can all enjoy a good laugh.)

The second way to respond to religious stupidity is to preach Jesus and nothing but Jesus.

Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. (Galatians 3:1)

Religion is stupid because it says it’s all about you and what you need to do. The cure for such stupidity is to hear about Christ and what he has done.

Religion says you’ll be wise if you worship the rules, but the gospel declares that Jesus is our wisdom from God.

Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? … But we preach Christ crucified: (1 Corinthians 1:20-23)

How Jesus makes us wise

The world is not impressed by a stupid manmade institution, but a church that displays the manifold wisdom of God shines like a city on a hill.

We all need wisdom. Every day I hear from people asking for wisdom in their marriages, workplaces, and churches.

“What should I do?”

What you should do is ask God for wisdom. “But I haven’t been to church, I haven’t tithed, I haven’t been a good person.”

So you think God only helps good people? You don’t believe in grace? Do you have rocks in your head? Renew your dull and unbelieving mind.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)

Religion will give you a lecture, but God will give you wisdom. Religion will make you pay, but God gives freely.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. (Ephesians 1:17)

Wisdom and knowing Jesus go together. Whatever your situation, make it your ambition to know the Lord. “Jesus, what do you think about this?”

The Lord longs to be gracious to you… Blessed are all who wait for him! … Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:18,21)

Know Jesus, know wisdom. When you know Jesus in your situation, you will know the way to go.

Grace, peace and wisdom be yours in abundance.

TRIUNFO

Hacer triunfar se usaba sólo en dos lugares. Aquí y en Col 2:15

Col 2:14

Borrando el acta de los decretos que había contra nosotros, que nos era contraria, y quitándola de en medio, clavándola en su cruz;

Col 2:15

Y despojando a los principados y a las potestades, los exhibió públicamente, triunfando de ellos en ella.

La palabra triunfo tiene una importante historia en los imperios griego y romano.

“La idea está tomada de un antiguo triunfo romano, que a los ojos del mundo de aquel tiempo era el espectáculo más glorioso que la imaginación podía concebir”. (Meyer)

Era una fiesta religiosa que sólo se convocaba cuando sus ejércitos obtenían una victoria. Era sobre todo para honrar al general victorioso y dar ofrendas a sus dioses. Generalmente era para honrar a Dionisio el Dios vino y fiesta.

Triunfo era el derivado romano del Triunfo griego. Era un festival que fue llamado después de la victoria de los ganadores sobre otros países .

La razón por la que Pablo utilizó esta palabra triunfo fue

Primero iban los líderes, aliados y soldados cautivos (y a veces sus familias), normalmente encadenados; algunos iban destinados a ser ejecutados o a ser exhibidos. Detrás iban las armas, armaduras, oro, plata, estatuas y tesoros curiosos o exóticos capturados, junto con pinturas, cuadros y maquetas que representaban lugares y episodios significativos de la guerra. A continuación, a pie, venían los senadores y magistrados de Roma, seguidos de los lictores del general con sus rojas túnicas de guerra y sus fasces coronadas de laurel, y luego el general en su carro de cuatro caballos. Un compañero, o un esclavo público, podía compartir el carro con él o, en algunos casos, sus hijos menores. Sus oficiales e hijos mayores cabalgaban cerca. El uso que hace Pablo de la palabra.

“Gracias a Dios, que siempre nos guía: Pablo tuvo que hacer frente a las críticas de los cristianos de Corinto, que decían que era poco fiable e inconstante a causa de sus planes de viaje. Se ha explicado a sí mismo y sus razones para no llegar cuando había planeado previamente. Más que nada, quería que los cristianos de Corinto supieran que sigue a Jesucristo como su General. Más que cualquier plan que pueda declarar a los cristianos de Corinto, el plan de Pablo es seguir a Jesucristo” Dave Guzik

Pablo estaba mostrando que no estaba siguiendo sus propios planes sino los planes del General Victorioso Jesús. Las personas que siguieron a Pablo y a Cristo fueron los ganadores. Todas las personas pueden ser victoriosas siguiendo la cruz del General Jesús

Pablo escribió en otro lugar que si los gobernantes de este siglo -con lo que se refería tanto a los poderes espirituales de las tinieblas como a sus representantes terrenales- hubieran sabido lo que sucedería en la cruz, nunca habrían crucificado a Jesús. Porque ellos, los poderes de la destrucción, todos los verdaderos odiadores se clavaron a sí mismos en la cruz.

Pero al hacerlo, los mismos siervos de Satanás firmaron su sentencia de muerte. Fueron humillados como los perdedores en un desfile Triunfal y marcharon delante de toda la Humanidad, y se dirigieron a la ejecución pública. . Jesus victoriosamente trajo a casa todo tipo de botin, significando bendiciones para aquellos que lo siguieron. Y Muerte para aquellos que eran los destructores, el Diablo y sus sirvientes. Siervos que son toda la jerarquía de poderes demoníacos que dirigen esta era y la gente que les sirve.

OLFATO OSME

En el desfile triunfal se quemaba mucho incienso. Para los vencedores romanos era un olor dulce, pero para los perdedores era el olor de la muerte o al menos de la esclavitud.

Para algunos es olor a muerte hasta la muerte. Aquellos que son voluntariamente ignorantes, y deliberadamente obstinados, detestan el evangelio, como los hombres detestan un mal olor, y por lo tanto son cegados y endurecidos por él: despierta sus corrupciones, y exaspera sus espíritus. Rechazan el evangelio, para su ruina, hasta la muerte espiritual y eterna. Matthew Henry

“Para los unos somos aroma de muerte que lleva a la muerte, y para los otros aroma de vida que lleva a la vida: El aroma del incienso quemado a los dioses en un desfile triunfal romano olía maravilloso para un romano. El mismo aroma era un mal olor para un prisionero de guerra cautivo en el desfile, que pronto sería ejecutado o vendido como esclavo.” Dave Guzik

“(2.) Para otros, el Evangelio es sabor de vida para vida. Para las almas humildes y bondadosas, la predicación de la palabra es sumamente deliciosa y provechosa. Como es más dulce que la miel al paladar, así es más agradecida que los olores más preciosos a los sentidos, y mucho más provechosa; porque así como los vivificó al principio, cuando estaban muertos en delitos y pecados, así los vivifica más, y terminará en la vida eterna.” Matthew Henry

Somos para Dios la fragancia de Cristo entre los que se salvan y entre los que se pierden: De la misma manera, el mensaje del evangelio es un mensaje de vida para algunos y un mensaje de condenación para los que lo rechazan (Juan 3:17-21). Dave Guzik

“Lo mismo sucede en la actualidad a los que reciben y a los que rechazan el Evangelio: es medio de salvación para los primeros, es medio de destrucción para los segundos; pues no sólo no se salvan porque no creen en el Evangelio, sino que se condenan porque lo rechazan.” (Clarke)

Los que rechazan el Evangelio están cegados por Satanás y ya estaban condenados. Algunos cuando se les muestra que necesitan un salvador siguen y ya no son condenados. Otros deciden rechazar a Jesús y son más y más condenados por su propia conciencia. Jesús no vino a condenar sino a salvar. Ellos se condenan a sí mismos.

Vayamos donde vayamos. Nosotros que seguimos a Cristo.. Emitimos un olor dulce. Los olores dulces son difíciles de olvidar. Cuando las personas que van a ser salvos huelen son atraídos por el perfume de Jesús. Y se queda en su memoria. Pero para algunos, los malos olores son más difíciles de olvidar y huelen a Jesús como degustar podrido se repelen más y más.

LOS MUCHOS VENDEDORES AMBULANTES

2Co 2:17

Porque no somos como muchos, que corrompen la palabra de Dios; sino que como de sinceridad, como de Dios, delante de Dios hablamos en Cristo.

Aqui hay otra imagen que Pablo uso de los vendedores ambulantes. Algunos no solo estaban corrompiendo la Palabra de Dios sino haciendo un negocio de ella.

El verbo para corromper es una palabra especial que sólo se usa una vez en el texto griego del Nuevo Testamento y eso llama la atención. Es καπηλεύω “kapeleuo” que significa 1) ser un minorista, vender al por menor 2) hacer dinero vendiendo cualquier cosa 3) cambiar la palabra Divina por cosas más bajas. 4) y a menudo los minoristas añadían y corrompían el vino o lo que fuera para obtener un beneficio más sórdido.

Estos eran “vendedores ambulantes” de la Palabra de Dios. Pablo acababa de decir: Quien basta para estas cosas. En vista de la gran procesión Eterna de Triunfo desplegada a través del Universo. ¿Quién? Sólo aquellos ministros que Dios mismo hizo capaces y suficientes para hacer la obra. (2 Corintios 3:6) ¡Es sólo por el espíritu santo que seguimos a Cristo y se nos da el poder para estar en este desfile Triunfal!

Pero el vendedor ambulante prefiere ver a cuantos puede convencer con su publicidad y palabras psicológicamente suaves. No por el espíritu sino por su propia astucia. Es cierto que hay muchos que llenan los asientos de la iglesia y la mayoría de los “chiristianos”

seguirán más bien a los vendedores ambulantes de la palabra. Pero no es el número lo que nos preocupa. No es cuántos creen la Verdad lo que prueba que la Verdad es la Verdad. De hecho, la mayoría prefiere ser engañada por los vendedores ambulantes y tener sus oídos picor y lujuria cosquillas a la muerte.

“Porque no estamos, como muchos, vendiendo la palabra de Dios: La palabra mercachifle tiene la idea de “adulterar” o “aguar” para obtener ganancias, y se usaba especialmente de un vendedor de vino que aguaba el vino para obtener mayores ganancias. Pablo no era como otros que aguaban el evangelio para obtener ganancias”.

“Sinceridad(probada a plena luz del día εἰλικρίνεια heilikrineia) es la antigua palabra griega eilikrineia, que significa “puro” o “transparente”. Barclay dice: “Puede describir algo que puede soportar la prueba de ser sostenido a la luz del sol y mirado con el sol brillando a través de él.” El mensaje y el ministerio de Pablo no tenían motivos o agendas ocultas.: Dave Guzik

Los seguidores de Cristo están más preocupados por seguirle que por tener la recompensa básica de la comodidad material y el apoyo de las multitudes. Es un camino solitario a la victoria pero el único camino es JESUS. Pero los números en su congregación no es prueba de fiabilidad o verdad. De hecho probablemente significa que están siguiendo a vendedores ambulantes de la palabra, diluyéndola con mentiras.

Deu 32:30 “¿Cómo podría uno perseguir a mil, Y dos poner en fuga a diez mil, A menos que su Roca los hubiera vendido, Y Jehová los hubiera entregado?

Pero yo prefiero estar en el lado ganador y marchar en Triunfo siguiendo a mi General Jesús quien es la Roca Jesús.

“Uno de tus hombres pone en fuga a mil, porque el SEÑOR tu Dios es el que pelea por ti, tal como te [fn]prometió.

La mayoría no gobierna solo la Verdad lo hace aunque seamos pocos los que le seguimos.

TRIUMPH

Faire triompher n’a été utilisé qu’à deux endroits. Ici et dans Col 2:15

Col 2:14

Il a effacé l’écriture des ordonnances qui était contre nous, et qui nous était contraire, et il l’a enlevée, en la clouant à sa croix ;

Col 2:15

Et ayant dépouillé les principautés et les puissances, il les a manifestées ouvertement, en triomphant d’elles par là.

Le mot triomphe a une histoire importante, d’abord dans l’empire grec puis dans l’empire romain.

“L’idée est empruntée à un ancien triomphe romain, qui, aux yeux du monde de cette époque, était le spectacle le plus glorieux que l’imagination pouvait concevoir.” (Meyer)

C’était une fête religieuse qui n’était appelée que lorsque leurs armées avaient remporté une victoire. C’était surtout pour honorer le général victorieux et faire des offrandes à leurs dieux. Habituellement, c’était pour honorer Dionysos, le dieu du vin et de la fête.

L’utilisation de ce mot par Paul.

” Grâces soient rendues à Dieu qui nous conduit toujours : Paul a fait face aux critiques des chrétiens de Corinthe, qui disaient qu’il était peu fiable et inconstant à cause de ses plans de voyage. Il s’est expliqué et a donné les raisons pour lesquelles il n’est pas arrivé au moment prévu. Plus que tout, il voulait que les chrétiens de Corinthe sachent qu’il suit Jésus-Christ comme son général. Plus que tout plan qu’il peut déclarer aux chrétiens de Corinthe, le plan de Paul est de suivre Jésus-Christ” Dave Guzik

Paul montrait qu’il ne suivait pas ses propres plans mais les plans du Général victorieux Jésus. Le butin et les perdants n’étaient pas des personnes… Les personnes qui ont suivi Paul et le Christ étaient les gagnants. Tout le monde peut être victorieux en suivant la croix du Général Jésus.

” Christ, dans cette image, est le général vainqueur ; les puissances et les autorités sont l’ennemi vaincu exposé comme le butin de la bataille devant l’univers entier. “

Paul a écrit à un autre endroit que si les dirigeants de ce siècle – par lesquels il entendait à la fois les puissances spirituelles des ténèbres et leurs représentants terrestres – avaient su ce qui allait se passer sur la croix, ils n’auraient jamais crucifié Jésus. Car eux, les puissances de la destruction, tous les vrais haineux se sont cloués à la croix.

Mais ce faisant, ces mêmes serviteurs de Satan ont signé leur arrêt de mort. Ils ont été humiliés comme les perdants d’un défilé triomphal et ont défilé devant toute l’humanité, pour être exécutés en public. . Jésus a ramené victorieusement toutes sortes de butins, ce qui signifie des bénédictions pour ceux qui le suivent. Et la mort pour ceux qui étaient les destructeurs, le Diable et ses serviteurs. Les serviteurs étant toute la hiérarchie des puissances démoniaques qui dirigent cet âge et les gens qui les servent.

ODEUR D’OSME

Lors du défilé triomphal, on brûlait beaucoup d’encens. Pour les vainqueurs romains, c’était une odeur douce, mais pour les perdants, c’était l’odeur de la mort ou du moins de l’esclavage.

Pour certains, c’est une odeur de mort jusqu’à la mort. Ceux qui sont volontairement ignorants, et volontairement obstinés, dégoûtent l’évangile, comme on déteste une mauvaise odeur, et c’est pourquoi ils sont aveuglés et endurcis par lui : il réveille leurs corruptions, et exaspère leurs esprits. Ils rejettent l’évangile, à leur perte, jusqu’à la mort spirituelle et éternelle. Matthieu Henry

“Pour l’un, nous sommes l’arôme de la mort conduisant à la mort, et pour l’autre l’arôme de la vie conduisant à la vie : L’odeur de l’encens brûlé aux dieux dans un défilé triomphal romain sentait merveilleusement bon pour un Romain. “(2.) Pour d’autres, l’Évangile est une saveur de vie pour la vie. Pour les âmes humbles et gracieuses, la prédication de la parole est très délicieuse et profitable. Nous sommes à Dieu le parfum du Christ parmi ceux qui sont sauvés et parmi ceux qui périssent : De même, le message de l’évangile est un message de vie pour certains et un message de condamnation pour ceux qui le rejettent (Jean 3:17-21). Dave Guzik

“Il en va de même, à l’heure actuelle, pour ceux qui reçoivent l’Évangile et pour ceux qui le rejettent : c’est le moyen de salut pour les premiers, c’est le moyen de destruction pour les seconds ; car non seulement ils ne sont pas sauvés parce qu’ils ne croient pas à l’Évangile, mais ils sont condamnés parce qu’ils le rejettent.” (Clarke)

Ceux qui rejettent l’Évangile sont aveuglés par Satan et ont déjà été condamnés. Certains, lorsqu’on leur montre qu’ils ont besoin d’un sauveur, le suivent et ne sont plus condamnés. D’autres décident de rejeter Jésus et sont de plus en plus condamnés par leur propre conscience. Jésus n’est pas venu pour condamner mais pour sauver. Ils se condamnent eux-mêmes.

Où que nous allions. Nous qui suivons le Christ… Nous dégageons une bonne odeur. Les douces odeurs sont difficiles à oublier. Quand les gens qui doivent être sauvés sentent, ils sont attirés par le parfum de Jésus. Et cela reste dans leur mémoire. Mais pour certains, les mauvaises odeurs sont plus difficiles à oublier et ils sentent Jésus comme une dégueulasserie pourrie et sont de plus en plus repoussés.

LES NOMBREUX COLPORTEURS

2Co 2:17

Car nous ne sommes pas comme plusieurs, qui corrompent la parole de Dieu ; mais c’est par sincérité, mais par Dieu, que nous parlons en Christ, sous le regard de Dieu.

Voici une autre image que Paul a utilisée des colporteurs. Certains ne se contentaient pas de corrompre la parole de Dieu, mais en faisaient un commerce.

Le verbe pour corrompre est un mot spécial utilisé une seule fois dans le texte grec du Nouveau Testament et cela attire l’attention. C’est καπηλεύω “kapeleuo” qui signifie 1) être un détaillant, colporter 2) faire de l’argent en vendant n’importe quoi 3) échanger la parole divine contre des choses plus basses. 4) et souvent les détaillants ajoutaient et corrompaient du vin ou autre chose pour faire un profit plus sordide.

C’étaient des “colporteurs” de la Parole de Dieu. Paul venait de dire : “Qui suffit pour ces choses”. En vue du grand cortège éternel de triomphe déployé à travers l’Univers. Qui ? Seulement les ministres que Dieu Lui-même a rendus capables et suffisants pour faire l’œuvre. (2Cor 3:6) Ce n’est que par le Saint-Esprit que nous suivons le Christ et que nous avons le pouvoir d’être dans ce défilé triomphal !

Mais le colporteur préfère voir combien de personnes il peut convaincre avec sa publicité et ses paroles psychologiquement douces. Non pas par l’esprit mais par leur propre ruse. Il est vrai que beaucoup remplissent les sièges des églises et que la majorité des “Chiristians” préfèrent suivre les colporteurs de la parole. Mais ce n’est pas le nombre qui nous intéresse. Ce n’est pas le nombre de personnes qui croient en la Vérité qui prouve que la Vérité est la Vérité. En fait, la majorité préfère être trompée par les colporteurs et voir leurs oreilles et leurs désirs chatouillés à mort.

Paul n’était pas comme les autres qui diluaient l’évangile pour le gain.”

“La sincérité(testée au grand jour εἰλικρίνεια heilikrineia) est le mot grec ancien eilikrineia, qui signifie “pur” ou “transparent”.” Barclay dit : “Il peut décrire quelque chose qui peut supporter l’épreuve d’être tenu à la lumière du soleil et regardé avec le soleil qui le traverse.” Le message et le ministère de Paul n’avaient pas de motivations ou d’agendas cachés… : Dave Guzik

Les disciples du Christ sont plus soucieux de le suivre que d’avoir la récompense de base du confort matériel et du soutien des foules. C’est un chemin solitaire vers la victoire mais le seul chemin est JESUS. Mais le nombre de personnes dans votre congrégation n’est pas une preuve de fiabilité ou de vérité. En fait, cela signifie probablement qu’ils suivent des colporteurs de la parole, la diluant avec des mensonges.

Deu 32:30 “Comment un seul pourrait-il en poursuivre mille, Et deux en mettre dix mille en fuite, Si leur rocher ne les avait vendus, Et si l’Éternel ne les avait livrés ?

Mais je préfère être du côté des vainqueurs et marcher en triomphe en suivant mon Général Jésus qui est le Rocher Jésus.

Jos 23:10

“Un seul de tes hommes en met mille en fuite, car c’est l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui combat pour toi, comme il te l’a promis.

La majorité ne gouverne pas, seule la Vérité gouverne, même si nous sommes peu nombreux à la suivre.

TRIUMPH

To cause to triumph was used only in two places. Here and in Col 2:15

Col 2:14

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Col 2:15

And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

The word triumph has an important history in first the Greek and then the Roman Empires.

“The idea is borrowed from an ancient Roman triumph, which to the eyes of the world of that day was the most glorious spectacle which the imagination could conceive.” (Meyer)

It was a religious festival only called when their armies had a victory. It was mostly to honor the victorious general and give offering to their Gods. Usually it was to honor Dionysus the God wine and party.

Triumph was the Roman derivate of the Greek Triumph. It was a festival that was called after the victory of the winners over other countries .

The reason Paul used this word triumph was

“Some ancient and modern sources suggest a fairly standard processional order. First came the captive leaders, allies, and soldiers (and sometimes their families) usually walking in chains; some were destined for execution or further display. Their captured weapons, armour, gold, silver, statuary, and curious or exotic treasures were carted behind them, along with paintings, tableaux, and models depicting significant places and episodes of the war. Next in line, all on foot, came Rome’s senators and magistrates, followed by the general’s lictors in their red war-robes, their fasces wreathed in laurel, then the general in his four-horse chariot. A companion, or a public slave, might share the chariot with him or, in some cases, his youngest children. His officers and elder sons rode horseback nearby. His unarmed soldiers followed in togas and laurel crowns, chanting “io triumphe!” and singing ribald songs at their general’s expense. Paul’s use of the word.

“Thanks be to God who always leads us: Paul dealt with criticism from the Corinthian Christians, who said he was unreliable and fickle because of his travel plans. He has explained himself and his reasons for not arriving when he had previously planned. More than anything, he wanted the Corinthian Christians to know he is following Jesus Christ as his General. More than any plan he may declare to the Corinthian Christians, Paul’s plan is to follow Jesus Christ” Dave Guzik

Paul was showing that he was not following his own plans but the plans of the Victorious General Jesus. The booty and the losers were not people. .People who followed Paul and Christ were the winners. All people can be victorious following the cross of General Jesus

“Christ, in this picture, is the conquering general; the powers and authorities are the vanquished enemy displayed as the spoils of battle before the entire universe.”

Paul wrote in another place that if the rulers of this age — by which he meant both the spiritual powers of darkness and their earthly representatives — had known what would happen on the cross, they would have never crucified Jesus. Because they, the powers of destruction, all the real haters nailed them selves to the cross.

But in doing so the same servants of Satan signed their death warrant. They were humiliated as the losers in a Triumphal parade and marched in front of all Humanity, and headed to public execution. . Jesus victoriously brought home all kinds of booty, meaning blessings for those following Him. And Death to those who were the destroyers, the Devil and his servants. Servants being all the hierarchy of demonic powers running this age and people serving them.

SMELL OSME

In the triumphal parade there was much incense burned. To the Roman victors it was a sweet smell but to the losers it was the smell of death or at least slavery.

• Unto some it is a savour of death unto death. Those who are willingly ignorant, and wilfully obstinate, disrelish the gospel, as men dislike an ill savour, and therefore they are blinded and hardened by it: it stirs up their corruptions, and exasperates their spirits. They reject the gospel, to their ruin, even to spiritual and eternal death. Matthew Henry
• “To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life: The scent of incense burnt to the gods in a Roman triumphal parade smelled wonderful to a Roman. • We are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing: In the same way, the message of the gospel is a message of life to some and a message of condemnation to those who reject it (John 3:17-21). Dave Guzik
• “The same happens to the present day to those who receive and to those who reject the Gospel: it is the means of salvation to the former, it is the means of destruction to the latter; for they are not only not saved because they do not believe the Gospel, but they are condemned because they reject it.” (Clarke)
• Those that reject the Gospel are blinded by Satan and were already condemned already. Some when it is shown to them they need a savior follow and are no longer condemned. Other decide to reject Jesus and are more and more condemned by their own conscience. Jesus did not come to condemn but save. They condemn themselves.
• Wherever we go. We who are following Christ.. We emit a sweet odor. Sweet smells are hard to forget. When people who are to be saved smell they are attracted to the perfume of Jesus. And it stays in their memory. But for some, bad smells are harder to forget and they smell Jesus as rotten degusting are repelled more and more.

THE MANY PEDDLERS

2Co 2:17

For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

Here is another image Paul used of peddlers. Some were not just corrupting the Word of God but making a business of it.

The verb for to corrupt is a special word used only once in the New testament Greek text and that draws attention to it. It is καπηλεύω “kapeleuo” meaning 1) to be a retailer, to peddle 2) to make money by selling anything 3) to trade the Divine word for baser things. 4) and often the retailers would add and corrupt wine or what ever to make more sordid profit.

These were “peddlers peddling” the Word of God. Paul had just said, Who is sufficient for these things. In view of the great Eternal procession of Triumph displayed across the Universe. Who? Only those ministers that God Himself made able and sufficient to do the work. (2Cor 3:6) It is only by the holy spirit we are following Christ and given the power to be in this Triumphal parade!

But the peddler would rather see how many they can convince with their advertising and psychologically smooth words. Not by the spirit but their own cunning. True there are many filling the church seats and the majority of “Chiristians” will rather follow peddlers of the word. But it is not in numbers we are concerned. It is not how many believe the Truth that prove Truth is Truth. In fact the majority rather be deceived by peddlers and have their itching ears and lusts tickled to death.

“For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God: The word peddling has the idea of “adulterating” or “watering down” for gain, and was especially used of a wine seller who watered down the wine for bigger profits. Paul was not like others who watered down the gospel for gain.”

“Sincerity(tested in broad daylight εἰλικρίνεια heilikrineia) is the ancient Greek word eilikrineia, which means “pure” or “transparent.” Barclay says, “It may describe something which can bear the test of being held up to the light of the sun and looked at with the sun shining through it.” Paul’s message and ministry did not have hidden motives or agendas.: Dave Guzik

Followers of Christ are more concerned with following him than to have the base reward of material comfort and the support of crowds. It is a lonely road to victory but the only way is JESUS. But numbers in your congregation is no proof of reliability or truth. In fact it probably means they are following peddlers of the word, watering it down with lies.

Deu 32:30 “How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock had sold them, And the LORD had given them up?

But I wouid rather be on the winning side and march in Triumph following my General Jesus who is the ROCK Jesus.

Jos 23:10

“One of your men puts to flight a thousand, for the LORD your God is He who fights for you, just as He [fn]promised you.

The majority doesn’t rule only the Truth does even if we are few that follow Him.

Peddling the Word of God for Profit | Preacher, Don’t Do It!

Ever feel ‘taken’ by fundraising ministers? There’s a small minority who are treating God’s Word like profit-making merchandise. Avoid them!

Word of God

The word of God is the way by which God makes himself and his will known.

The word of God or the word of the Lord can be conveyed via prophecies (1 Sam. 3:21, 2 Sam. 24:11, 1 Kgs. 14:18), dreams (Num. 12:6), visions (Gen. 15:1), the Law (Num. 36:5, Deu. 5:5, Is. 2:3), and angels (Luke 1:35). The word of God can also be communicated via the scriptures, a sermon, a song, a sonnet, and countless other ways. However, the primary way God reveals himself is through his Son.

Jesus is the Word of God made flesh (John 1:14, Rev. 19:13), and the exact radiance or representation of God the Father (Heb. 1:3). As someone once said, Jesus is God explaining himself to the human race. Jesus is God’s selfie.

In the new covenant, the Word of God has its clearest expression through the gospel of Jesus. “No one has seen the Father, except the One who is from God” (John 6:46). “No one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son reveals him” (Matt. 11:27). It is through Jesus alone that we encounter the true character of God. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me” (John 14:6).

God’s word is powerful, creative and sustains all things (2 Pet. 3:5). His word is the means by which the universe came into existence (Gen. 1:3, John 1:1). His word gives life to the dead (Eze. 37:4). His word is a lamp that guides us in the path of life (Ps. 119:105). God’s word always comes to pass (Is. 55:11).

The word of God is revealed in the word of the kingdom (Matt. 13:19) or the word of the Christ (Rom. 10:17). It is revealed in the gospel of Jesus (Mark 1:1) and the gospel of grace (Acts 20:24).

1Sa 3:21

And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

The word of the Lord was revealed to Samuel the prophet. When the Word of God is revealed, God will never let the words drop to the ground. This means the Word of God cannot be stopped.

1Ki 14:18

And they buried him; and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet.

God revealed himself through His prophets

Num 12:6

And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

Num 12:7

My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.

Num 12:8

With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

Gen 15:1

After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, H4236 saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

God can speak His words to man in visions (in the ecstatic state)  מַחֲזֶה maḥăzê

 Num 24:4

He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision ^H4236 of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

A trance is a vision not in sleep but a state of communion with God with the eyes open. A trance or Godly meditation in prayer.

Num 36:5

And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well.

The Word of God was revealed to Moses and Moses wrote what God revealed to him in visions, and speaking directly to moses by the holy spirit.

Isa 2:3

And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

The Word or revelation of who God is was given to Moses and the prophets by the holy spirit and they wrote it down. Thus the Word of God was written in the Law.

 2Pe 1:21

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Luk 1:35

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Gabriel the angel and the other angels are messengers from God. The angels that rebeled are now demons and they to bring messages that are only lies. But the angels of God bring the word of God to man in special circumstances.

Luk 1:35

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

All through the Old testament God had to communicate to man in the flesh. Since Adam disobeyed God he lost the life of God the spirit, and only had his five senses of the fleshly organs.

Man could no longer communicate with God except by Gods grace, God spoke thorugh burning bushes, parting seas, men called to be prophets. All was a development or evolution of man being able to see and hear Gods Word.

The Old testament was only a glimpse of a small part of God. But gradually the times changes where man was ready to receive the full communication. The Son of God who was the total communication or Word of God in the flesh so that we now could see God in all His completeness in a Man ….Jesus.

Jhn 6:46

Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

Rev 19:13

And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Jhn 1:14

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus was the Word of God in the flesh as a man we could see.

2Pe 1:19

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Before man had glimpses but God   continued to break through the hardness of fallen mans heart. God planned a Son of God, His seed to overcome the darkness of man. He had a plan from the beginning and it was Jesus the Son of God.

There were many faulty glimpses and types in the Old testament but all was culminated when the religious Jews needed a to be woken and God told them. Leave the Law and see my WORD JESUS!

Mat 17:3

And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

Peter, James and John were taken to the mount of transfiguration to see that something even more important than the Law of Moses nad the word of the prophets was here.

Mat 17:4

Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

Thus it was evident they needed some more revelation

Mat 17:5

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

God showed them and us, that now we see God through Jesus. The full revelation of God’s Grace and Truth. Listen to Jesus.

And so I do we must list to the holy spirit which is Christ living in us. Every one who believes Him. We must look at all the Old testament through what Jesus said and did. He is the lens I look through when I try to understand Gods Word. Nothing is more important than the life of Jesus as a revelation of God!  

One proof I look for in seeing if the translations of the Old testament are Canon or not is if they are quoted by Jesus in Matthew Mark Luke and John.  If the are there is no question. If not I put all the scripture at the feet of my Lord Jesus to show me. He can because He still does.

Jhn 14:26

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Jhn 16:13

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

And this Comforter is the gift of the holy spirit that HE did send on the day of Pentecost that same year.

1Pe 1:9

Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

1Pe 1:10

Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

Manking was always limited by his own flesh since “Adam bit the apple” and God was working all things together to save mankind by Gods grace and mercy. All the killing and genocides. All the wars or Joshua. All that was God doing his best to show that God is love. When the times where right He was able to send His  Son into the flesh world.

Even the prophets were limited by their own flesh and fleshly world around them.

But Grace broke through in the person of Jesus the real Word of God

1Pe 1:11

Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

Finally Jesus Christ came to show what grace is. He showed the true character of God. HE revealed that Our Father is full of mercy and love. He came to live and give His whole life for us even to the death. But he also showed that there was super powerful glory to follow

1Pe 1:12

Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

Even the angels could not know and that was Good! Because if the princes of this world knew the Glory and Power to be given to mankind, then the devil would never have crucified Christ. In fact the devil would had offered (he did ) Jesus a promotion to be the chief of all the devil’s kingdoms.!

The mystery of Christ living in Eternal life in every Believer was hidden not by God. It was hidden from the time of Adams sinning by mankinds in ability to believe and see God!!

But all things did work together for those who love God and God is smarter than the devil! The devil can try to predict and he can try to program the future. But only God knows the future because He was already there! Things like the devil and death are temporary and have to go. Death and all dying things are bound by their own clocks and time is not their friend. But our God is Eternal and beyond time.

1Pe 1:13

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

Some people see this as only future tense for us. Someday we will see. But no I see it as God has revealed His Grace in Jesus Christ when He was born. It is past tense and is continuing.  Now the Grace of the Gospel is being revealed more and more until thar perfect day when He returns to destroy all darkness.

God said to Peter James and John and to all who follow. Listen to Jesus He is the Word!

2Pe 1:16

For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

 2Pe 1:17

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

2Pe 1:18

And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount

We also are eye witness when we manifest the power of Christ in us with signs and miracles following preaching the Gospel of Gods Grace!

2Pe 1:19

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

We have been taught that it is Sola Scriptura. Only the Word and only the KJV of it. What a “cunningly devised fable”! Is is rather Solus  Christus!  And we have the Christ living in us as the Comforter!

That is the the more sure word of prophecy! That is the Light! Granted Christ shines to us through many means and chiefly through the Scripture we have learned of Him. But He cannot be bound by any translation of it, since we do not have any perfect translation.  But it we have believed in Jesus Christ it is always by the Grace of God and not the best Masoretic students! We have heard enough of Jesus and Him crucified and risen, then we have the more sure word of prophecy living in our hearts by Gods grace and not by some Phd in theology!

So you want the Word of God? It is JESUS! He is God’s heart and love expressed in Man.

He is the Word of God. He is not God but He is the revelation of God completely.  The Logos created the universe for Him and for us. God the Word created the first creation with His words. God also created the second creation in Christ and will continue creating a NEW heaven and earth. By Christ who is in the world as His people and will return to complete the new creation sooner than you think.

JESUS THE WORD OF GOD

THE GOSPEL (BY PAUL ELLIS)

The original word for gospel (euaggelion, G2098) means good news or glad tidings. It does not mean bad news. By definition, any gospel that leaves you fearful of an angry and judgmental God is no gospel at all. It is not good news. And any so-called gospel that leaves you insecure and uncertain, forever wondering if you are accepted and forgiven is also not good news.

WHAT THE GOSPEL IS NOT

The gospel is not the Bible, the law, or the red-letter teachings of Jesus. The accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are called gospels but they are not the gospel. Collectively, these four books contain more than 60,000 words but the gospel can be summarized in a single sentence, even just a word.

The good news is not the good book, the good law, or the good words of the good Teacher. Neither is it good advice, good instruction, or good wishes. The good news is news—it is the announcement of the glad tidings of a happy God that brings great joy to all (see Luke 2:10). The gospel that Jesus preached begins like this: “For God so loved… that he gave …” (John 3:16). The gospel is first and foremost a declaration of love backed up with a gift. It’s the announcement of a love-gift and the gift is Jesus.

WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

What is the good news that makes the good news good? It is the revelation of the love of God that comes to us through Jesus Christ. The gospel is the glad and merry news that God is good, he loves you, and he will happily give up everything he has so he can have you. Contrary to popular belief, God is not mad at you. He is not even in a bad mood. The good news declares that God is happy, he is for you, and he wants to share his life with you forever (see Rom. 8:31–32). The gospel is the good news that you can rest from your labors and stop trying to fix your broken and mortal life. A true Savior has come and he offers you his blessed life in exchange. You need not fear death any longer, for the life he offers you is eternal (John 3:15).

The proof of the gospel is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On the cross God showed that he loved us while we were sinners and that he would rather die than live without us (Rom. 5:8). And through the resurrection he proved that nothing—not even death—can separate us from the love that is ours in Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:38-39).

God loves you and wants to be with you (John 14:23, 2 Cor. 5:20). It’s a simple truth, but we will spend eternity exploring the limitless expressions of his unending love. Indeed, this is what we were made for—to receive and respond to our Father’s love. The reason you exist is because God had a dream and wrapped it up in you. This is the best news you ever heard.

THE GOSPEL OF GRACE

The unconditional love of God appears to us as grace. Grace is love come down, and grace is the very essence of the gospel. A gospel without grace is no gospel at all, for it is the grace of God that saves us (Acts 15:11, Eph. 2:8, 2 Tim. 1:9), forgives us (Eph. 1:7), justifies us (Rom. 3:24, Tit. 3:7), declares us righteous (Rom. 5:17, 2 Cor. 5:21) and raises us to new life (Eph. 2:5). It’s a great loss to think that grace is just for “sinners.” Well all need grace (see entry for Acts 13:43).

Jesus is the author and the perfecter of our faith (Heb. 12:2). He doesn’t just get you started; he completes what he began. Grace is for everyone. Grace saves you at the beginning and it keeps you through to the end. “Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him (Col. 2:6). How did you receive Jesus? By faith. How should you continue to live in him? By faith. It’s faith in his all-sufficient grace from first to last.

The gospel revealed in the Bible goes by several names. There is the gospel of Jesus Christ (Mark 1:1) or the gospel of Christ (Rom. 15:19, 1 Cor. 9:12, 2 Cor. 2:12, 9:13, 10:14, Gal. 1:7, Php. 1:27, 1 Th. 3:2). There is the gospel of God (Mark 1:14, Rom 1:1, 15:16, 2 Cor. 11:7, 1 Th. 2:2, 8, 9, 1 Pet. 4:17), the gospel of the blessed God (1 Tim. 1:11), and the gospel of his Son (Rom 1:9). There is the gospel of the kingdom (Matt. 4:23, 9:35, 24:14, Luke 16:16), and the gospel of the glory of Christ (2 Cor. 4:4). But these are all different labels for the one and only gospel of the grace of God (see entry for Acts 20:24).

The gospel of grace is wholly unlike the rule-based religion many of us are familiar with. Religion is complicated but grace is simple. Religion is vague but grace is crystal clear. Religion finds fault and does nothing to help, but the grace of God propels you triumphantly through life’s toughest challenges. Religion will give you a headache and leave you sick and tired, but grace gives strength to the weary and life to the dead. Religion seeks to bridle the free but grace liberates the prisoner and the oppressed.

As more people come to appreciate the beauty and richness of the undiluted gospel, sermons on other subjects will disappear like yesterday’s news. The power of God is only revealed in the gospel, and we have been called to preach nothing less.

THE SHORT AND SWEET GOSPEL

History’s greatest preachers proclaimed a simple gospel with few words and much power. Paul brought the kingdom of heaven to the pagan city of Corinth with nothing more than a five-word gospel—“Jesus Christ and him crucified”—backed up with the power of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 2:2). Peter needed only twelve words to declare to his fellow Jews the good news that “God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). Three thousand believed the message and were saved the same day.

John needed only seven words to herald the end of the old covenant and the dawn of the new: “Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). And Jesus needed just nine words to reveal himself as the end of all our searching: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

As you can see, there are many different ways of saying the same thing. As long as you are revealing the love of God as personified by Jesus—who he is, what he has done and why—then you are preaching the gospel.

The gospel is simple enough for a child to understand. You don’t need to know Greek to get it. Neither do you need to go to seminary or Bible school to figure it all out. In a word, the gospel is Jesus for Jesus is the embodiment of the Father’s grace (see entry for 1 Cor. 1:4). The grace of God comes to us through Jesus (John 1:14, 17), and we grow in grace by growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18).

WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE GOSPEL?

Jesus tells us what we must do with the gospel: “Repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). The apostles said the same thing: “Hear the word of the gospel and believe” (Acts 15:7). We are to believe the good news.

Believing is both the work of God and his command (John 6:29, 1 John 3:23). We are to change our doubting minds and agree with God that he is good and he loves us. We are to receive by faith his saving grace and walk free from our prison of sin and distrust (Acts 16:31). We are to be clothed with his righteousness and be adopted as his dearly-loved children.

The good news is true whether you believe it or not, but it won’t do you any good unless you believe it. Jesus did not come merely to teach and tell stories; he came to rescue you and your family. He wants to set you free from dead religion and the endless quest for self-improvement. He wants to reconcile you to your heavenly Father who loves and accepts you. Believe this good news and find rest for your soul.

The other thing we are to do with this gospel is tell others so that they too may hear the good news (Mark 16:15). Jesus preached the gospel (Luke 20:1) and his disciples and the apostles preached the gospel (Luke 9:6, Acts 8:25, 14:7, 21, 16:10, 1 Cor. 1:17). We tell people the good news of God’s grace so that all may know the peace and joy that comes from receiving the Father’s great love.

THE ETERNAL GOSPEL

The gospel is called the eternal gospel because it offers eternal security to those who believe it (Rev. 14:6). The eternal gospel declares that the blood of Jesus obtained your eternal redemption (Heb. 9:12). In Christ, you have an eternal salvation (Heb. 5:9) and an eternal inheritance (Heb. 9:15), guaranteed by an eternal covenant (Heb. 13:20), resulting in eternal life (John 3:16) and a welcome into the eternal kingdom (2 Pet. 1:11) by the eternal God (Rom 16:26). This good news should bring you eternal comfort (2 Thess. 2:16).

EL EVANGELIO (POR PAUL ELLIS)

La palabra original para evangelio (euaggelion, G2098) significa buenas noticias o buenas nuevas. No significa malas noticias. Por definición, cualquier evangelio que te deje temeroso de un Dios enojado y sentencioso no es evangelio en absoluto. No son buenas noticias. Y cualquier supuesto evangelio que te deje inseguro e incierto, preguntándote siempre si eres aceptado y perdonado, tampoco es una buena noticia.

LO QUE NO ES EL EVANGELIO

El evangelio no es la Biblia, ni la ley, ni las enseñanzas de Jesús. Los relatos de Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan se llaman evangelios, pero no son el evangelio. En conjunto, estos cuatro libros contienen más de 60.000 palabras, pero el evangelio puede resumirse en una sola frase, incluso en una sola palabra.

La buena noticia no es el buen libro, la buena ley o las buenas palabras del buen Maestro. Tampoco son buenos consejos, buenas instrucciones o buenos deseos. La buena noticia es noticia: es el anuncio de la buena nueva de un Dios feliz que trae gran alegría a todos (cfr. Lc 2,10). El evangelio que predicó Jesús comienza así: “Porque tanto amó Dios… que dio…” (Juan 3:16). El Evangelio es, ante todo, una declaración de amor respaldada por un don. Es el anuncio de un amor-regalo y el regalo es Jesús.

¿QUÉ ES EL EVANGELIO?

¿Cuál es la buena noticia que hace que las buenas noticias sean buenas? Es la revelación del amor de Dios que nos llega a través de Jesucristo. El Evangelio es la alegre y feliz noticia de que Dios es bueno, te ama y con gusto renunciaría a todo lo que tiene para poder tenerte. Contrariamente a la creencia popular, Dios no está enfadado contigo. Ni siquiera está de mal humor. Las buenas noticias declaran que Dios es feliz, está por ti, y quiere compartir su vida contigo para siempre (ver Rom. 8:31-32). El Evangelio es la buena noticia de que puedes descansar de tus fatigas y dejar de intentar arreglar tu vida rota y mortal. Ha llegado un verdadero Salvador y te ofrece a cambio su bendita vida. Ya no tienes que temer a la muerte, porque la vida que él te ofrece es eterna (Juan 3:15).

La prueba del Evangelio se encuentra en la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo. En la cruz, Dios demostró que nos amaba mientras éramos pecadores y que prefería morir antes que vivir sin nosotros (Rom. 5:8). Y mediante la resurrección demostró que nada -ni siquiera la muerte- puede separarnos del amor que nos une a Jesucristo (Rom. 8:38-39).

Dios te ama y quiere estar contigo (Juan 14:23, 2 Cor. 5:20). Es una verdad sencilla, pero pasaremos la eternidad explorando las expresiones ilimitadas de su amor sin fin. De hecho, para eso fuimos creados: para recibir y responder al amor de nuestro Padre. La razón por la que existes es porque Dios tuvo un sueño y lo envolvió en ti. Esta es la mejor noticia que jamás hayas oído.

EL EVANGELIO DE LA GRACIA

El amor incondicional de Dios se nos presenta como gracia. La gracia es el amor hecho carne, y la gracia es la esencia misma del Evangelio. Un evangelio sin gracia no es evangelio, porque es la gracia de Dios la que nos salva (Hechos 15:11, Efesios 2:8, 2 Timoteo 1:9), nos perdona (Efesios 1:7), nos justifica (Romanos 3:24, Tito 3:7), nos declara justos (Romanos 5:17, 2 Corintios 5:21) y nos resucita (Efesios 2:5). Es una gran pérdida pensar que la gracia es sólo para los “pecadores”. Pues todos necesitamos la gracia (véase la entrada correspondiente a Hch. 13:43).

Jesús es el autor y el perfeccionador de nuestra fe (Heb. 12:2). Él no sólo te hace comenzar, sino que completa lo que comenzó. La gracia es para todos. La gracia te salva al principio y te mantiene hasta el final. “Así como recibisteis a Cristo Jesús como Señor, seguid viviendo en él” (Col. 2:6). ¿Cómo recibiste a Jesús? Por la fe. ¿Cómo debes seguir viviendo en él? Por la fe. Es la fe en su gracia que todo lo basta de principio a fin.

El Evangelio revelado en la Biblia recibe varios nombres. Está el evangelio de Jesucristo (Marcos 1:1) o el evangelio de Cristo (Romanos 15:19, 1 Corintios 9:12, 2 Corintios 2:12, 9:13, 10:14, Gálatas 1:7, Filipenses 1:27, 1 Tesalonicenses 3:2). 3:2). Está el evangelio de Dios (Marcos 1:14, Romanos 1:1, 15:16, 2 Corintios 11:7, 1 Timoteo 2:2, 8, 9, 1 Pedro 4:17), el evangelio del Dios bendito (1 Timoteo 1:11) y el evangelio de su Hijo (Romanos 1:9). Está el evangelio del reino (Mt. 4:23, 9:35, 24:14, Lc. 16:16), y el evangelio de la gloria de Cristo (2 Co. 4:4). Pero todas estas son etiquetas diferentes para el único evangelio de la gracia de Dios (véase la entrada de Hechos 20:24).

El evangelio de la gracia es totalmente diferente a la religión basada en reglas con la que muchos de nosotros estamos familiarizados. La religión es complicada, pero la gracia es sencilla. La religión es vaga, pero la gracia es clara como el cristal. La religión encuentra fallas y no hace nada para ayudar, pero la gracia de Dios te impulsa triunfalmente a través de los desafíos más difíciles de la vida. La religión te dará dolor de cabeza y te dejará enfermo y cansado, pero la gracia da fuerza al cansado y vida al muerto. La religión trata de frenar al libre, pero la gracia libera al prisionero y al oprimido.

A medida que más gente aprecie la belleza y la riqueza del Evangelio sin diluir, los sermones sobre otros temas desaparecerán como las noticias de ayer. El poder de Dios sólo se revela en el Evangelio, y hemos sido llamados a predicar nada menos que eso.

EL EVANGELIO BREVE Y DULCE

Los más grandes predicadores de la historia proclamaron un evangelio sencillo, con pocas palabras y mucho poder. Pablo llevó el reino de los cielos a la ciudad pagana de Corinto con nada más que un evangelio de cinco palabras: “Jesucristo y éste crucificado”, respaldado por el poder del Espíritu Santo (1 Co. 2:2). Pedro sólo necesitó doce palabras para declarar a sus compatriotas judíos la buena nueva de que “a este Jesús a quien vosotros crucificasteis, Dios le ha hecho Señor y Cristo” (Hch. 2:36). Tres mil creyeron el mensaje y se salvaron el mismo día.

Juan sólo necesitó siete palabras para anunciar el fin de la antigua alianza y el amanecer de la nueva: “La gracia y la verdad vinieron por Jesucristo” (Juan 1:17). Y Jesús sólo necesitó nueve palabras para revelarse como el fin de toda nuestra búsqueda: “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida” (Juan 14:6).

Como ves, hay muchas maneras de decir lo mismo. Mientras estés revelando el amor de Dios personificado en Jesús -quién es, qué ha hecho y por qué-, estarás predicando el Evangelio.

El evangelio es lo suficientemente sencillo como para que lo entienda un niño. No necesitas saber griego para entenderlo. Tampoco hace falta ir al seminario o a la escuela bíblica para entenderlo todo. En una palabra, el Evangelio es Jesús, porque Jesús es la encarnación de la gracia del Padre (véase la entrada de 1 Cor. 1:4). La gracia de Dios nos llega a través de Jesús (Juan 1:14, 17), y crecemos en gracia al crecer en la gracia y el conocimiento de Jesucristo (2 Pedro 3:18).

¿QUÉ HACEMOS CON EL EVANGELIO?

Jesús nos dice lo que debemos hacer con el evangelio: “Arrepentíos y creed en el Evangelio” (Marcos 1:15). Los apóstoles dijeron lo mismo: “Oíd la palabra del evangelio y creed” (Hechos 15:7). Debemos creer en la buena nueva.

Creer es tanto obra de Dios como mandato suyo (Juan 6:29, 1 Juan 3:23). Hemos de cambiar nuestras mentes dubitativas y estar de acuerdo con Dios en que es bueno y nos ama. Hemos de recibir por fe su gracia salvadora y caminar libres de nuestra prisión de pecado y desconfianza (Hch 16,31). Hemos de revestirnos de su justicia y ser adoptados como sus queridos hijos.

La buena noticia es verdad, la creas o no, pero no te servirá de nada si no la crees. Jesús no vino simplemente a enseñar y contar historias; vino a rescatarte a ti y a tu familia. Quiere liberarte de la religión muerta y de la interminable búsqueda de la superación personal. Quiere reconciliarte con tu Padre celestial, que te ama y te acepta. Cree en esta buena noticia y encuentra descanso para tu alma.

La otra cosa que debemos hacer con este evangelio es contárselo a otros para que ellos también escuchen las buenas nuevas (Marcos 16:15). Jesús predicó el Evangelio (Lucas 20:1) y sus discípulos y los apóstoles predicaron el Evangelio (Lucas 9:6, Hechos 8:25, 14:7, 21, 16:10, 1 Cor. 1:17). Contamos a la gente la buena nueva de la gracia de Dios para que todos conozcan la paz y la alegría que da recibir el gran amor del Padre.

EL EVANGELIO ETERNO

El Evangelio se llama el Evangelio eterno porque ofrece seguridad eterna a quienes lo creen (Apoc. 14:6). El evangelio eterno declara que la sangre de Jesús obtuvo su redención eterna (Heb. 9:12). En Cristo, usted tiene una salvación eterna (Heb. 5:9) y una herencia eterna (Heb. 9:15), garantizada por un pacto eterno (Heb. 13:20), que resulta en vida eterna (Juan 3:16) y una bienvenida al reino eterno (2 Ped. 1:11) por el Dios eterno (Ro. 16:26). Esta buena noticia debe traerle consuelo eterno (2 Tes. 2:16).
