1Pe 2:4

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Jesus Christ is our foundation and our cornerstone and we are His Temple built by God not men

We house the presence of God in people called not in buildings built. But the temple is a picture of the unity we have being built as one Temple. Not many denominations. That was never Gods intention or will.

Jesus was not accepted but rejected, yet God chose Him as the precious and living stone. We know no stones are literally alive with breath but this is a picture. He was the living stone and He still is.

1Pe 2:5

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

IF we put our trust in Him we are also living. We have been made alive and called from the dead world. HE was the first “living stone” In reference to the Temple God is building. And so are we living stones. We are chips of the same block.

We are being built up. Not a one time event in the past, but it is still a progress. The verb for build up is in the Present passive meaning “we are being built up” as a spiritual house.

We are a spiritual house, it is in us that God dwells, lives and we grow as a family larger and larger. The body of a child is fed milk to grow as Peter just told us

“1Pe 2:2

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

We are being built brick upon brick as new members are added.

The goal of this building and growing together in union is to glorify God

We are called to be the real priesthood. We are the chosen to be the priest for God.

We have replaced the priests of the Temple in Jerusalem, that was probably Davids idea.  The temple was the best God could do with His people at that point due to David having some kind of flesh myopia.  Jesus came to show God in the real temple.

We have replaced sacrifices that God never really wanted.

We are now offering ourselves as “living sacrifices”:  “that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Rom 12:1

Heb 10:8 NIV “First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law.

Hos 6:6 “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

God never wanted animal blood, but He wanted our heart. HE never wanted religious ritual but all of our life. A Father wants a family.

HE did not want to be impressed by our toys when we sacrificed a few cheap sheep. Then we ran away from being close to Him, back to our ways. HE wants us totally as any loving Father would not be pleased with getting little bits of his family.  Our Father wants us at the dinner table and in all the family games and activities. Not just when we feel guilty, but we can benefit from every second with Him.

Our spiritual sacrifice is Mercy, and love to our enemies. Our spiritual sacrifice is to live for Christ and die for Christ. Our sacrifice is not doves, rams, beef, or even a Lamb. The Father wants US totally! HE did it all to buy us by the blood of the one sacrifice that matters, His own Son.

1Pe 2:6

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Or as some older translations put it “Because that it is contained in scripture”

Isa 28:16 KJV – 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Those who cling to the old Law and old Temple that was made by the will of men and with their money and labor, they will lose. The peace and comfort was to embrace this “chief corner stone” who came to the old Temple to lay the foundation for the real Temple and His own Body.

A corner stone was built into man made pagan temples as a stone upon which the other stone rested like a foundation. But also it was often a corner stone that joined two walls. It is amazing and still debated how the ancient civilizations could place stones together with such seamless accuracy. So close together that no one could slip a piece of paper between the joints.

Our cornerstone Jesus as our head also aligns each member in perfect harmony. When we base all our ideas on His we find we are perfectly aligned in this temple. It is Jesus who was the gnomon or pattern setter. He was our architectural square and standard for all life. When we believe on Him we need not be confounded, ashamed or run away in panic. When we believe on Him as our standard we are solidly placed in His body.

1Pe 2:7

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

The Jews refused to believe the Son of God when He came to them. Some believed but the majority continued to cling to their traditions.  They did not find him precious but a bastard and liar.  They crucified Him in hopes of taking His kingdom but without the King. These were the builders of the second Temple built by Herod.  And yet God made Jesus to be this chief or head or the corner.  It was Jesus that set the pace and without Him none of the stones could be aligned. HE was the corner stone. He was the standard.

1Pe 2:8

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Like Jesus had warned them in the parable of the Vineyard owner, they had better come to Him or be destroyed.

Mat 21:42

Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Mat 21:43

Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

Mat 21:44

And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder

Mat 21:45

And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.

And He was addressing them. A very few turned to Him like Nicodemus and Paul but most continued trying to build the temple without the true sacrifice. Many tried building their religion without God. Many tried to build their own Kingdom without the King and they have not given up even until today.

When the Jews(by religion) turn to Him they too will be saved

Rom 11:23

And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.

And only then will they be saved. Paul turned to Jesus at the road of Damascus. Nicodemus and some of the Jews did.

Rom 11:26

And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

But the only Israel that is saved are those who turn to the Deliver that came to Zion, that being Jesus the chief cornerstone of the  Spiritual temple. The Isreal of God and the Body of Christ.

Rom 11:29

For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

It is not that God made a special deal with one race of men. It is that God offered it to His total Creation. All men created in Gods image are broken and God wants all men to be fixed to the way He made them in the beginning. All of Gods gifts are positive and he never withholds any thing from His creation. It is the devil that talks us our of it. It is human nature, of shall we say Adam’s nature to run and change our minds about God. God never changed His mind for us. HE did create the universe for Mankind and that is all who will believe.

1Pe 2:9

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

We are chosen from both Jews and Gentile. That was a mystery to the Jewish prophets, but now it is no more mystery. The apostles revealed that God always planned one people, on family made from all kinds of races. That which the devil scattered God brings together in unity with one Lord and one body.

1Pe 2:10

Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Before we Gentiles were strangers and foreigner. But no longer because of Christ

Eph 2:11-14  “ That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;”

Rom 11:17

And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree

We have been placed into Israel, we are now part of the chosen people. But its not that we are so special or good. It was always Gods plan to save all men!

Rom 11:19

Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.

That idea is wrong. God did not break the Jewish branches of His body to enter the Gentiles! Its not because God needed the Gentiles more than the Jews. It was because some people just do not want to have eternity with God and refuse it

Rom 11:20

Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

So it was their unbelief that broke them off. And it always was the chosen peoples weakness to replace a Family with a Religon.  Jesus is joining all Mankind as a family.
