2Pe 1:20
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
How do we interpret the word?
Does it really interpret itself?
The word interpret or interpretation in English means
`1) To decode the meaning of a topic and then act
2) To explain or tell the meaning of; to translate orally into intelligible or familiar language
3) represent by means of art; to show by illustrative representation
4) To convey what a user of one language is saying. To translate
But what does this word mean in the verses here
2Pe 1:20
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
“Private” in the phrase means “ones own” Interpretation is in Greek ἐπίλυσις epilysis
Epilysis in Greek is literally a “a loosening, unloosing” And the epilysis is the noun interpretation coming from the verb to interpret “epiluo”
Bothe epiluo and epilusis were formed by the prefix “epi”or upon added to the word “luo” or loose upon, or untie and unloose.
“Epiluo” became to mean figuratively to “clear up a controversy” or “to explain (what is obscure and hard to understand”
The noun “interpretation” is used only here in this phrase “no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation” but the verb to interpret, epiluo is used twice
Mar 4:34
But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded (epiluo) all things to his disciples.
And was translated in the KJV as “expounded”
Act 19:39
But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined (epiluo)in a lawful assembly.
Here epiluo was translated into English by “determined”
We see that Jesus was able to make clear and explain His own words. When the disciples asked He could explain.
I know that Jesus said He would send his spirit to live in us and that holy spirit would guide us into all truth
Jhn 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you
Jhn 16:13
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
The Spirit will teach us all things. This holy spirit we received on Pentecost is what Jesus promised God would send to us. HE will also bring the scripture and the sayings of Jesus to our mind when we need them. This spirit will guide us into all truth. This spirit will show us the way.
This gift of the Comforter or Holy spirit is explained in 1 Corinthians 12 and it is said to that it is presented as wisdom and knowledge. Spiritual wisdom and knowledge that cannot be know with the highest intelligence except there is this Comforter guiding.
1Co 12:8
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:10
To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
Also it gives us the ability to spiritually discern demons from Gods voice. From the lies of doctrines of demons from the doctrine and words of God.
“to another discerning of spirits” the word here for discerning is “diakrisis”
It means to be able to separate one thing from another. The good from the bad
Heb 5:14
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern (diakrisis) both good and evil.
It takes time to exercise and build muscles. Days, weeks and years. So it is with excercising the inner man. It is by the revelation of the eyes of our understanding that we can tell good from bad. Not the fleshy senses, but the senses controlled by the Higher senses of the Christ within.
Job 23:10
But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
IN the spetuagint “tried me” was diakrino. God will use the heat to separate the flesh or th dross from the gold which is the Christ within.
So we must discern but how without Christ, the very Spirit of Christ in me?
Some have said the Bible takes the place of the absent Christ. Uhhhh really?
I though He said
“for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. Heb 13:5-6
Heb 13:8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
We are the word in the flesh now, because we have the Word in the Flesh, Christ in man in us.
So yes we do have the power to discern evil from good if we open our spiritual eyes. But without a real relationship with the Jesus Christ who is not absent we cannot tell right from wrong.
And then there is the word “interpretation again.
This time it is more like translation. Changing the words from one language into something understandable in another. This is the word hermeia interpretation (of what has been spoken more or less obscurely by others) Thus Hermes even was a good talker but did He have Christ?
We get the word hermeneutics from this. Do you know what it means? No? I didbt either.
But it is a “Study or theory of the method of interpreting the text of holy scriptures”
With and absent Christ you just have theories and no method. You had better be manifest the Christ within by speaking in tiongues and interpreting it also by the God given spirit of Christ.
